Job Description

Position Summary
The Mechanical Inspector is responsible for inspecting precision metal stampings, assemblies, and raw materials throughout various stages of production. This includes work performed at assembly stations, inspection booths, presses, and shipping/receiving areas. The role ensures all products meet required specifications and relies on strong knowledge of quality assurance principles, inspection methods, and precision measurement tools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret blueprints and engineering specifications to determine material requirements, surface finishes, and dimensional criteria.
  • Assess surface finishes using tactile comparison techniques.
  • Measure critical dimensions—including length, height, and distance—using precision instruments such as micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, optical comparators, CMMs, and snap gages.
  • Locate reference points and measure angles, arcs, and radii using surface plates, gage blocks, V-blocks, sine bars, and related precision tools.
  • Record findings on inspection documentation and promptly report discrepancies.
  • Inspect first-run parts and verify the performance and calibration of inspection equipment.
  • Test material hardness using standardized hardness testing equipment.
  • Assist in training and evaluating new or probationary inspectors.
  • Perform additional inspection-related tasks driven by customer or product requirements.
  • Process customer requests for part balancing and verify part balance during production, including first-piece checks.
  • Calibrate static balancers to required settings and use them to assess part balance and record data.
  • Conduct capability studies to confirm product compliance with customer specifications.
  • Communicate nonconforming findings to quality leadership or engineering personnel.

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.

Experience

  • At least two years of experience in mechanical inspection or a related position involving routine inspection tasks.

Essential Skills

  • Understanding of basic quality terminology and concepts.
  • Familiarity with statistical process control, including data plotting and identifying out-of-control conditions.
  • Knowledge of measurement systems, calibration requirements, and inspection terminology.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, including understanding of critical, major, and minor characteristics.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and coordinate systems.
  • Ability to use inspection planning tools, conduct audits, and determine appropriate sample sizes.
  • Strong mathematical abilities, including unit conversions and basic algebra.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for delivering and receiving detailed information.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully in a team-oriented manufacturing environment.
