Job Overview
The Nursing Assistant (NA) acts as a caregiver for residents during their scheduled shifts in long-term care settings. This role involves delivering resident-focused nursing care and assisting with daily living activities under the guidance of a registered nurse (RN). The NA is responsible for providing age-appropriate care that addresses both the physical and psychological needs of residents, as outlined in their care plans.
As a vital member of the nursing team, the NA is expected to adhere to infection prevention protocols and utilize Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriately. Responsibilities include:
- Assisting with essential health care tasks such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, and undressing.
- Obtaining and documenting vital signs.
- Offering psychosocial support and personal care to assigned residents.
- Helping residents with mobility, including transferring, repositioning, and walking, using proper techniques and equipment.
- Facilitating range of motion and passive exercises.
- Contributing to food preparation and ensuring a pleasant dining experience for residents.
- Assisting with meals and snacks, and providing water and nutritional supplements as needed.
The NA also supports nursing staff with procedures as required, documents resident interactions and care outcomes, and communicates any changes in residents' conditions to the charge nurse. Additional duties include:
- Collecting non-invasive body fluid samples and vital signs.
- Providing housekeeping and laundry services to maintain clean living environments.
- Assisting with wellness and recreational programs, encouraging resident participation.
- Participating in departmental or organizational committees and task forces as necessary.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) is preferred but not mandatory.
- Minimum age requirement is 16 years.
- Prior experience as a clinical or nursing assistant in long-term care is preferred.
- Must possess a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification from the State Board of Nursing or be certified within four months of starting the position by enrolling in a training program.
- CNA training and certification will be provided by the facility.
- Must successfully complete annual competency testing and maintain a record of continuing education credits, with a minimum of 12 hours required each year.
- For applicable states, must be certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
- This position may require classification as a Sanford Category II Driver, necessitating a motor vehicle report and proof of a valid driver’s license, along with medical qualifications to perform essential driving functions as per organizational policy.
