POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Director of Public Safety, the Public Safety Supervisor is responsible for providing a safe and secure environment to effectively safeguard the students, residents, employee’s, Sisters of Charity, visitors and physical facilities of the campus communities (USM and Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth). This includes providing a highly visual presence to deter crime through a variety of means including vehicle and foot patrols while protecting the property and assets of the campus communities.

In addition to safety responsibilities, this position plays a key leadership role by supervising and supporting public safety staff. The Supervisor is responsible for assigning duties, monitoring performance, providing training and guidance, and ensuring adherence to departmental policies and procedures. The role also involves assisting in daily departmental operations, contributing to access control and restorative justice initiatives, and serving as a point of contact in the absence of the Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides direct supervision and support to Campus Safety Officers, ensuring staff performance aligns with departmental standards and expectations.
  • Oversees the execution and review of patrol activities, daily logs, incident reports, and safety-related investigations to ensure accuracy, compliance, and thorough documentation.
  • Develops and maintains shift schedules, ensuring adequate coverage for all campus safety operations.
  • Leads the onboarding and continuous training of Campus Safety Officers, ensuring they are well-versed in department protocols, patrol procedures, emergency response, and customer service best practices.
  • Leads community education sessions on emergency preparedness topics, including active violence response and severe weather protocols for the Campus Safety Officers, students, and employees.
  • Oversees and coordinates response to campus emergencies, alarms, and incidents; serves as liaison with emergency services personnel to ensure timely and effective resolution.
  • Responsible for maintaining and monitoring the university’s access control, key scan, and CCTV systems.
  • Responsible for maintaining data and reporting compliance with the Clery Act, VAWA, and other safety regulations, in addition to assisting with the preparation of the Annual Security Report.
  • Assists with managing parking control, permits, and enforcement for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Assists with identifying and addressing safety concerns and hazards, and works with internal departments to improve protocols.
  • Assists the Director of Public Safety with student conduct cases, including conducting interviews and supporting restorative justice practices.
  • Ensures departmental expenditures remain within the defined budget by closely monitoring and controlling costs
  • Assists the Director of Public Safety with department projects, policies, and procedures, ensuring alignment with industry best practices (e.g., IACLEA).
  • Assists with staffing university events to ensure a safe environment for attendees.
  • Participates in university meetings, committees, and community partnerships related to public safety.
  • Delivers exceptional customer service to students, faculty, staff, and visitors while actively overseeing the performance and service delivery of Campus Safety Officers to ensure high standards of professionalism and responsiveness.
  • Serves as a Title IX Investigator, conducting thorough and impartial investigations into complaints of discrimination, harassment, and misconduct, while ensuring compliance with all federal and institutional regulations.
  • Available to respond to campus during emergencies or closures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in the area of Criminal Justice or Social Work or equivalent experience preferred
  • CPR First Aid AED
  • Must be 21 years of age or over
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Able to be an approved driver per USM policy
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • High Attention to detail
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays
  • Ability to work in a variety of environment including adverse outdoor conditions such as cold, rain, heat
  • Must be able to respond to campus 24 hours a day in the event of campus emergencies

Preferred Requirements:

  • 3 to 5 years of security experience
  • 2 years of security supervising experience
  • Experience working in a campus environment
  • Working knowledge of the Clery Act
  • Experience in conducting investigations
