Contemporaries is a government contracting firm seeking a skilled and adaptable Speech Writer to support the Office of the Surgeon General within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This individual will play a key role in translating complex medical and public health information into clear, compelling, and accessible messaging for diverse audiences.

The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer with the ability to synthesize technical or scientific information into plain language, ensuring messaging is accurate, engaging, and easily understood by the general public. This role also includes editing speeches, preparing briefing materials, and providing administrative support as needed in a fast-paced federal environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, edit, and finalize speeches, remarks, talking points, and written communications for senior leadership
  • Translate complex medical, scientific, and public health information into clear, concise, and accessible language for public audiences
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure accuracy of content and alignment with public health priorities
  • Review and refine messaging to ensure consistency, tone, and clarity across communications
  • Prepare briefing materials, background documents, and summaries for leadership engagements
  • Support rapid-response communications and time-sensitive messaging as needed
  • Conduct research on public health topics to support speech development and messaging
  • Provide general administrative support, including coordination, document management, and other operational tasks as assigned


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, Public Health, Journalism, or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience in speechwriting, communications, or content development
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex or technical information into plain language
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting federal agencies, government officials, or executive leadership
  • Familiarity with medical, scientific, or public health terminology
  • Background in healthcare, public health, or science communications
  • Experience preparing communications for high-visibility or public-facing roles
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders
