Job Description

The Reciprocating Generator Repair Technician/Mechanic is essential to the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and testing of electric motors, pumps, gearboxes, generators, and rotating equipment that power critical, heavy industry applications.

Key Responsibilities:

Inspection & Disassembly

  • Disassemble and inspect generators, alternators, and related electrical generation equipment
  • Identify electrical, winding, and control system issues through thorough troubleshooting
  • Inspect rotors, stators, windings, slip rings, brushed, bearings, and excitation components for wear, damage, or failure
  • Evaluate cooling systems, insulation integrity, and electrical connections for degradation or failure

Repair & Rebuild

  • Clean, repair, or replace components such as rotos, stators, windings, slip rings, brushes, bearings, gaskets, seal, and related electrical parts
  • Perform rotor and stator inspections, winding reconditioning, and insulation testing as required
  • Adjust excitation systems, voltage regulators, and governor controls to manufacturer specifications
  • Conduct load bank testing and performance verification of rebuilt and repaired generator sets
  • Reassemble generators and alternators according to OEM specifications, ensuring proper torque values, clearances, and tolerances
  • Perform alignment of engine-to-generator coupling and verify property electrical output prior to return to service

Documentation & Quality

  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, parts used, and labor time
  • Ensure all work meets company quality standards and safety regulations
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment in accordance with company policies

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Strong electrical aptitude with working knowledge of electrical generation systems, alternator construction, and control systems
  • Proficiency with generator-specific hand and power tools, including torque wrenches, megohmmeters, and multimeters
  • Ability to read and interpret OEM service manuals, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings
  • Proficiency with precision measuring and electrical test instruments including dial indicators, feeler gauges, and calipers
  • Familiarity with excitation systems, voltage regulators, and associated components
  • Understanding of governor systems, automatic transfer switches (ATS), and generator control panels
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to operate a forklift and overhead crane (or willingness to be trained)
  • Commitment to company policies, procedures, and safety standards

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Technical or vocational training in electrical technology, power generation, or related field preferred
  • Minimum of two (2) years of hands-on experience with electrical generation equipment or generator repair preferred
