Job DescriptionProject Engineering Geologist (RG/CEG)

Project Engineering Geologist (RG/CEG)

Position Overview
We are seeking a Project Engineering Geologist (RG/CEG) to provide technical leadership on engineering geology and geotechnical projects. The role will lead subsurface and surface site characterization, geohazard and seismic assessments, geotechnical report preparation, and construction monitoring while ensuring regulatory compliance and quality control. The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary project teams, clients, and contractors to deliver practical, code-compliant solutions for infrastructure, development, and remediation projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the project lead and licensed engineering geologist (RG/CEG) for site characterization, subsurface investigations, and geotechnical engineering studies.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise field programs including drilling oversight, borehole and rock core logging, CPT and SPT testing, insitu testing, piezometer and settlement plate installation, and sampling for laboratory testing.
  • Perform engineering geology and geotechnical analyses including soil mechanics, slope stability and landslide evaluation, rock mechanics, rockfall mitigation, liquefaction and seismic hazard assessments, foundation and retaining wall design support, and ground improvement recommendations.
  • Prepare clear, comprehensive geotechnical and engineering geology reports, technical memoranda, permitting documentation, and remedial action plans that meet industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct laboratory data review and coordinate triaxial, permeability, consolidation, and other soil and rock testing; ensure QA/QC of field and laboratory data in accordance with ASTM standards.
  • Develop and implement instrumentation and monitoring plans (inclinometers, piezometers, settlement plates, and data acquisition systems) and perform long-term construction monitoring and contractor oversight.
  • Apply geotechnical and numerical modeling tools (SLOPE/W, GeoStudio, PLAXIS, FLAC, MODFLOW) and CAD/GIS software (AutoCAD/Civil 3D, GIS) to support design and analysis.
  • Perform environmental and hydrogeologic assessments including Phase I/II ESAs, contaminant hydrogeology, remediation planning, and coordination with regulatory agencies (CEQA/NEPA, RCRA, CERCLA).
  • Ensure design compliance with seismic and building codes (ASCE 7, IBC) and prepare risk and geohazard assessments for client decision-making.
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, and client communications; mentor junior staff, coordinate subconsultants and contractors, and maintain project QA/QC.
  • Support business development by contributing to proposals, scopes of work, and technical presentations to clients and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • RG/CEG Licensing (required): Registered Geologist and Certified Engineering Geologist in the applicable state(s).
  • Bachelor's or Masters degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in engineering geology and geotechnical investigations with progressive responsibility leading projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in subsurface investigation methods including drilling oversight, borehole logging, rock core logging, CPT, SPT, and field sampling for soils and groundwater.
  • Technical proficiency with soil mechanics, slope stability analysis, landslide evaluation, seismic hazard and liquefaction assessment, rock mechanics, earthwork and grading, ground improvement, and retaining wall design.
  • Experience with geotechnical and numerical analysis software (SLOPE/W, GeoStudio, PLAXIS, FLAC), hydrogeologic modeling (MODFLOW), and CAD/GIS tools (AutoCAD/Civil 3D, GIS).
  • Familiarity with instrumentation and monitoring (inclinometers, piezometers, settlement plates), data acquisition, and interpretation of LiDAR, photogrammetry, and remote sensing datasets.
  • Knowledge of laboratory testing protocols (triaxial, permeability, consolidation) and ASTM testing standards; experience supervising laboratory QA/QC.
  • Experience with environmental site assessments (Phase I/II), contaminant hydrogeology, remediation planning, and regulatory compliance (CEQA/NEPA, RCRA, CERCLA).
  • Strong technical writing skills for geotechnical report writing, clear presentation of findings, and preparation of permitting and remediation documentation.
  • Proven project management and client communication skills, including scope and budget management, contractor oversight, and mentoring of junior staff.
  • Preferred: experience with SLOPE/W, GeoStudio, PLAXIS, FLAC, MODFLOW; familiarity with seismic design standards (ASCE 7, IBC); and experience in landslide evaluation, rockfall mitigation, ground improvement, and construction monitoring.
