About the Role

Co-op Food Stores is seeking an experienced and collaborative Controller to lead our day-to-day accounting operations. Reporting to the Director of Finance, this role ensures accurate financial reporting in accordance with GAAP, maintains strong internal controls, and manages a team of three accounting professionals.

Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership & Management

•Maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls

•Partner with teams across the organization

•Coach and develop accounting staff, supporting growth and advancement

•Accounting Operations

•Oversee month-end and year-end close

•Ensure timely AP, AR, payroll, debt payments, and reconciliations

•Maintain chart of accounts, inventory costing, and financial records

Reporting & Analysis

•Prepare accurate monthly financial statements for leadership and the Board

•Support budgeting, variance analysis, and financial decision-making

•Assist with annual reporting and key financial metrics

Compliance

•Coordinate annual audits

•Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal reporting and tax requirements

Desired Skills, Experience and Qualifications

•Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, or equivalent experience

•6+ years of progressive accounting experience (retail or multi-location a plus)

•3+ years managing an accounting team

•CPA or CMA required

•Strong Excel skills and experience with accounting systems (Acumatica preferred)

•Organized, detail-oriented and collaborative
