Job Summary:

The Grain Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records related to grain transactions, including purchases, sales, inventory, and hedging activities. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the financial integrity of our grain operations, providing timely and accurate financial reporting, and supporting efficient business decision-making. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of agricultural commodities, accounting principles, and excellent analytical skills.

Key Responsibilities:

Grain Transaction Management:

  • Process and reconcile grain purchases from producers, including scale tickets, contracts, and payment processing.
  • Process and reconcile grain sales to customers, including invoices, shipping documents, and payment application.
  • Manage and track grain contracts (futures, options, basis, and forward contracts), ensuring accurate recording and settlement.
  • Reconcile daily/weekly/monthly grain positions, including physical inventory, open contracts, and hedging instruments.

Inventory Management:

  • Maintain accurate grain inventory records, including inbound and outbound movements, grade factors, and storage locations.
  • Conduct regular inventory reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.

Financial Reporting & Analysis:

  • Prepare and analyze financial statements and reports specific to grain operations (e.g., gross margin analysis, inventory reports, profitability by commodity/contract).
  • Assist with month-end close processes, including journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations related to grain.
  • Provide financial insights and analysis to management regarding grain market trends, pricing, and operational performance.

Accounts Payable & Receivable:

  • Process accounts payable for grain purchases and related expenses.
  • Monitor accounts receivable for grain sales and ensure timely collections.

Compliance & Controls:

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting standards, company policies, and industry regulations.
  • Maintain strong internal controls over grain transactions and inventory.
  • Assist with audits (internal and external) as they relate to grain operations.

System Management:

  • Utilize and maintain grain accounting software (AGRIS) systems effectively.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and system enhancements.

Communication & Collaboration:

  • Communicate effectively with grain originators, merchandisers, elevator personnel, and customers.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure seamless operations and accurate information flow.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

Experience:

  • 2+ years of experience in accounting, with a strong preference for experience in the agricultural or commodities industry, specifically grain.
  • Experience with grain accounting software (AGRIS) is highly desirable.

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (advanced functions, pivot tables).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of commodity futures and options markets is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Typically, sedentary work; however, some walking or standing may be required.
  • Ability to work in an office environment.
