POSITION SUMMARY
The Technical Services Librarian is responsible for technical functions of the library, including cataloging, creating and maintaining metadata for print and electronic collections, print serials, bindery shipments, statistics and reporting, and scholarly communications.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate for the Technical Services Librarian role will be a detail-oriented and organized professional with a strong background in cataloguing, metadata creation, and collection management. They will have experience using Library of Congress subject headings and classification, as well as a deep understanding of technical services workflows in an academic or theological library setting. Additionally, they will be proficient in managing print and electronic collections, including copy cataloguing, serials management, bindery preparation, and electronic resource troubleshooting. They should also be comfortable compiling and analyzing collection usage statistics to support data-driven decision-making. Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability are essential for overseeing special and rare book cataloguing, managing gift book triage, and contributing to scholarly communications initiatives. The ability to assist with reference and circulation services ensures a well-rounded approach to library support. A passion for theological scholarship, experience with integrated library systems, and a commitment to enhancing library services through technical expertise and collaboration will make this candidate an invaluable asset to the team.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Completing original cataloguing as needed using Library of Congress subject headings and classification
- Overseeing copy cataloguing
- Maintaining and enhancing the cataloguing of the library’s special and rare books collections
- Overseeing arrival of print serials, researching and claiming missing serial issues, and identifying volumes that are ready to be bound
- Preparing shipments to the bindery for print serials, theses and dissertations, damaged books, and other materials as needed
- Performing triage of gift books
- Gathering and keeping statistics related to the management of collections and the usage of library materials
- Producing annual and ad hoc reports about the collections
- Managing Electronic Resources, including knowledge base selection, access, and troubleshooting
- Assisting with the ongoing development of the library’s scholarly communications initiatives
- Providing reference and circulation assistance to library patrons as needed
- Assisting in any other tasks as needed or assigned by the Director or Assistant Director of the Library
Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS
- Master of Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Familiarity and experience with current cataloguing rules and procedures using RDA and MARC 21
- Familiarity with Lutheran theology and practice
- Ability to perform detailed and accurate work with little supervision
- Strong organizational skills
- Strong attitude for customer service
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including strong listening, verbal, and written communication
- Skill using Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Google Docs, and Google Sheets
- Exceptional candidates will have skill using Perl or similar software tools primarily for string processing
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to sit or stand at a computer up to eight hours a day
- Ability to walk for prolonged periods of time
- Ability to lift up to fifteen pounds
