Job DescriptionPosition Summary

The Assistant Camp Director for Lower Camp supports the planning, coordination, and supervision of summer camp programs for children ages 3 to 8. This role ensures a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment that promotes child development through play, exploration, and structured activities, aligned with the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Key ResponsibilitiesProgram & Staff Support:

  • Assist with the daily operations of lower camp programs, including activity scheduling, camper transitions, and special events.

  • Provide direct support and supervision to counselors working with preschool and early elementary-aged children.

  • Collaborate with the Camp Director to develop age-appropriate activities that support cognitive, physical, and social-emotional growth.

Camper Safety & Engagement:

  • Ensure adherence to YMCA safety protocols, ratios, and emergency procedures.

  • Serve as a lead responder to minor incidents, behavioral concerns, and parent communications.

  • Model and reinforce positive behavior management practices that foster respect and cooperation.

Staff Development:

  • Mentor and train camp counselors and junior staff in child development principles, inclusion, and effective camper engagement.

  • Provide constructive feedback and ongoing coaching to support staff performance and morale.

Family Communication:

  • Greet and communicate daily with families during drop-off and pick-up, promoting a welcoming camp culture.

  • Assist in resolving parent concerns promptly and professionally, escalating issues to the Camp Director as needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age: 20 years old.

  • At least 1 year of experience in a camp, early childhood, or youth development setting.

  • Experience supervising or mentoring staff is strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the developmental needs of children ages 3–8.

  • CPR/First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain prior to camp start).

  • Must pass background check and meet all YMCA child safety standards.
