About the Coach Across Americas Coach Program
Founded in 2010, Coach Across America is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring youth to achieve their potential by providing coaches trained in positive youth development. We do this by identifying, training, and supporting coaches in their communities who bring sports-based youth development to the most underserved communities. Our Coach and Training programs empower youth-based organizations nationwide to become a united force for meaningful change. Our Coach Program is the first national service program to identify and train young adults to coach and mentor kids in low-income communities. Coaches are trained in youth development and mentoring strategies to promote physical activity, healthy living, and good decision-making, while cultivating caring, trust-based relationships with the youth they serve.
About Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP)
The Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 1974, Public Law 93415, as amended, established the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) to support local and state efforts to prevent delinquency and improve juvenile justice systems. A component of the Office of Justice Programs within the U.S. Department of Justice, OJJDP works to prevent and respond to youth delinquency and protect children. Through its divisions, OJJDP sponsors research, program, and training initiatives; develops priorities and goals and sets policies to guide federal juvenile justice issues; disseminates information about juvenile justice issues; and awards funds to states to support local programming.
Vision Statement:
OJJDP envisions a nation where all children are free from crime and violence. Youth contact with the justice system should be rare, fair, and beneficial.
Mission Statement:
OJJDP provides national leadership, coordination, and resources to prevent and respond to youth delinquency and victimization. The Office helps states, localities, and Tribes develop effective and equitable juvenile justice systems that create safer communities and empower youth to lead productive lives. OJJDP volunteers are not employees of Coach Across America, the Program or of the federal government. Volunteers are not allowed to perform employee duties or otherwise displace employees, and therefore are generally not eligible to receive unemployment compensation unless required by respective state law.
About: Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena:
Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena (FFDIA) is a nonprofit organization established in 1996 to rescue the Fort Dupont Ice Arena in Southeast Washington, DC from closure. FFDIA revitalized the arena and operated it through March 2023, when it was demolished. The new Fort Dupont Ice Arena, which is being constructed by the District of Columbia government is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2025. FFDIA also manages and offers programming at Canal Park Ice Rink, a seasonal outdoor rink just two miles away from Fort Dupont. The new arena is located on the same footprint and will again provide space for recreational and enrichment opportunities for the community. As the only public indoor ice arena located in Washington, DC and the only skating facility in the region that provides free skating programs to children living in areas of concentrated disadvantage, FFDIAs mission is to provide increased opportunity, education and inspiration to young people in the District of Columbia through ice skating and educational activities. Kids On Ice (KOI) is the signature program of FFDIA. KOI programs provide high-quality ice skating instruction to local youth from across DC, regardless of ability to pay. There is a focus on both increasing the number of new participants and encouraging continued participation. On average each year, over 1000 children skate during school hours as a component of physical education classes, or during summer programming through partnerships with local schools and nonprofit organizations. In addition, typically up to 400 youth participate in basic skating instruction on weekends. FFDIA also offers advanced skating instruction in synchronized skating, advanced figure skating, ice hockey, and/or speed skating for over 100 youth each.
