A high-acuity cardiovascular intensive care opportunity is available for an experienced Registered Nurse with specialized skills in cardiac surgical care. This contract role is based on the 3rd floor of the Heart Tower in Asheville, North Carolina, and centers on providing exceptional care in a 19-bed mixed CVICU/CVRU unit.
Responsibilities include managing postoperative heart surgery patients utilizing advanced monitoring and life support devices such as ECMO, Impellas, IABP, and LVADs. The position requires proficiency in procedures like hemodynamic monitoring, frequent ambulation, chest tube and pacer wire removal, as well as intubation and extubation management. Collaboration with a skilled team of charge nurses and educators enhances clinical support and ongoing orientation.
Key Qualifications and Experience:
- Current BLS and ACLS certification
- Minimum of 2 years experience in CVICU or CVRU settings
- Critical Care training with a passion for surgical heart care
- Ability to perform advanced cardiac nursing procedures confidently
- Preferred certifications in Critical Care, Cardiac Surgery, or Recovery Room care
- High energy and a positive, lifelong learner attitude
This role follows a schedule with shifts beginning precisely at 7:00 AM or 7:00 PM, requiring punctuality and adherence to unit policies. Nurses may be floated to other ICUs or stepdown units as needed, with overtime requiring approval. Every other weekend shift is scheduled with extra days off provided.
The Heart Tower unit is renowned for a strong team culture, supporting approximately 850 heart surgeries annually. Nurses work alongside educators and enjoy a 1:2 or 1:1 nurse-to-patient ratio dependent on patient acuity, ensuring quality and focused care.
