Position Summary
The Manufacturing Technologist – Mechanical is a highly hands-on, shop-floor focused role responsible for supporting, troubleshooting, improving, and maintaining manufacturing equipment, tooling, and automated systems. This position spends a significant amount of time on the production floor working directly with equipment, supervsors, maintenance, and engineering to keep production running safely and efficiently while driving continuous improvement in quality, uptime, and throughput.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Work directly on the manufacturing floor to set up, calibrate, adjust, and optimize production equipment, assembly lines, and automated systems to meet production targets
- Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and basic electrical issues in real time to minimize downtime and keep production running
- Design, modify, and improve tooling, fixtures, jigs, molds, and dies using 3D CAD software to improve quality, repeatability, and operator efficiency
- Assist with hands-on installation, commissioning, startup, and validation of new equipment and process changes
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and pneumatic/hydraulic/electrical schematics to support troubleshooting and improvements on the floor
- Develop, update, and support SOPs, setup sheets, and operator work instructions based on real-world production conditions
- Perform hands-on root cause analysis of equipment failures, scrap, and quality issues, and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA)
- Drive continuous improvement activities on the floor focused on safety, efficiency, downtime reduction, and waste elimination
- Partner closely with production operators, maintenance technicians, and quality teams to quickly resolve issues and improve overall equipment effectiveness
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, or related field preferred
- Min 3 years of hands-on manufacturing, maintenance, or industrial engineering support experience preferred
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and basic electrical troubleshooting
- Strong shop-floor troubleshooting experience in a production environment
- Ability to use precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, dial indicators)
- Machine shop experience (lathe, mill, drill press, CNC) preferred
- Experience with 3D CAD software; exposure to automation or basic programming a plus
- Strong hands-on problem-solving ability under production pressure
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, physically active manufacturing environment
- Strong communication skills and ability to work directly with operators and maintenance teams
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Primarily a shop-floor, hands-on manufacturing role with some office work
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing, and occasional lifting required
- Regular exposure to noise, machinery, moving equipment, and varying temperatures
- Must follow all safety requirements and wear PPE including steel-toed boots, safety glasses, and hearing protection
