Job Summary:
The Safety Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving the organization’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs to ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations. This role plays a key part in protecting employee health and public health, reducing workplace risks, and maintaining a safe and compliant manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive EHS and safety programs tailored to steel fabrication and manufacturing operations.
- Conduct safety training programs including new hire orientation, welding safety, crane operation safety, forklift safety, and ongoing refresher training.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through employee engagement, safety meetings, and ongoing workplace safety awareness initiatives.
- Lead safety committee meetings and encourage employee participation in improving workplace health and safety performance.
- Ensure full compliance with OSHA safety standards, environmental regulations, and company EHS policies through regular audits and inspections.
- Conduct job hazard analyses, safety inspections, and risk assessments to identify hazards and implement corrective actions.
- Investigate workplace incidents, injuries, and near misses, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Partner with HR to manage workers’ compensation claims and safety documentation.
- Coordinate all environmental compliance programs, including hazardous materials management, waste disposal, and welding byproduct control.
- Ensure adherence to EPA and state environmental regulations related to air emissions, waste management, and water permits.
- Track and maintain environmental permits and reporting requirements while supporting environmental inspections and audits.
- Support company initiatives that promote environmental sustainability and public health protection in manufacturing operations.
- Collaborate with production teams to integrate EHS and safety procedures into daily operations, SOPs, and 5S / lean manufacturing initiatives.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives such as Kaizen projects focused on improving workplace safety performance and environmental impact.
- Maintain and improve standard operating procedures (SOPs) for critical safety processes including Lockout/Tagout, confined space entry, and equipment operation.
- Ensure proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and enforce company safety policies.
- Lead emergency preparedness programs, including evacuation planning, fire drills, and incident response training.
- Coordinate first aid and workplace health initiatives to support employee wellness and public health best practices.
- Maintain readiness for workplace emergencies, environmental incidents, and regulatory inspections.
- Work cooperatively with team members to achieve production and EHS safety objectives.
- Maintain accurate documentation and reporting related to safety performance, environmental compliance, and incident tracking.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support workplace safety, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience as a Safety Specialist, EHS Specialist, or Occupational Safety professional supporting workplace safety, environmental compliance, and public health initiatives. Safety experience in steel fabrication, metalworking, or similar manufacturing environments is strongly preferred.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Public Health, Industrial Engineering, or a related safety or environmental discipline preferred. Associate’s degree or equivalent experience in manufacturing safety, environmental compliance, or EHS program support within steel fabrication or industrial operations required.
- Certifications:
- OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification with a focus on welding and fabrication safety preferred or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire.
- OSHA Train-the-Trainer Certification preferred or willingness to obtain within 180 days of hire to support in-house safety training programs.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or similar credentials are a plus.
- Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) or welding safety certifications are a plus.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA standards (e.g., 29 CFR 1910.252 for welding), EPA, and Texas-specific environmental regulations (e.g., TCEQ air permits).
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or similar EHS and Safety Specialist certifications are a plus.
- Familiarity with 5S methodology or lean manufacturing in industrial settings is a plus
- Expertise in evaluating safety and environmental considerations for steel fabrication processes in advanced manufacturing, including welding, cutting, and material handling.
- Strong communication skills, including written and verbal communication, to conduct training and collaborate with fabrication teams, including welders, machine operators, material handlers, maintenance teams, and supervisors.
- Proficiency in EHS management software or tools for tracking compliance, incidents, and environmental metrics.
- Ability to analyze data and produce reports on safety performance and environmental initiatives (e.g., emissions reduction, waste minimization).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for documentation and presentations.
- Ability to work on-site at the McGregor, TX facility, with occasional travel to support global collaboration and continuous improvement of EHS and Safety Specialist programs.
- Ability to read, write, and understand basic English/Spanish to interpret/follow safety guidelines and work instructions.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull objects weighing up to [e.g., 50 pounds] regularly.
- Ability to work in various environmental conditions common to a manufacturing facility (e.g., varying temperatures, noise levels, potential for dust/debris, wet floors).
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for operating equipment and handling supplies.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in a professional steel fabrication environment with standard manufacturing conditions, including controlled exposure to noise, dust, and equipment.
- The Safety Specialist regularly conducts site inspections within fabrication areas and occasionally performs outdoor environmental inspections as part of EHS and public health compliance activities.
- May involve occasional overtime or weekend work for audits, training, or emergency preparedness activities.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses, hard hats, and steel-toed boots, is required.
Work Schedule:
- Full-time: Standard day shift, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday, with flexibility to support production needs.
