We are currently recruiting for a Technical Editor of Marine Sciences to assist the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) with professional technical editing services. The editor manages and executes the process by which staff members publish and document scientific research. This includes publishing in the formal scientific literature as well as in informal series maintained by the agency.

This will be a full-time position. Work will be performed at the NEFSC Facility or via remote offsite location as pre-approved by the Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR) and Project Lead The contract has a one-year base period and will have up to four (4) 12-month option periods.

Duties:

  1. Work effectively with authors to develop manuscripts and deal with publishing issues.
  2. Make periodic required reports to NOAA Fisheries.
  3. Assist authors with interpreting journal submission and copyright policies.
  4. Copyedit scientific manuscripts.
  5. Maintain and circulate a current style sheet and author guidelines for agency-published serials and papers.
  6. Ensure that final agency-published serials and papers conform to Council for Science Editors style and other agency standards, and meet Section 508 standards prior to electronic distribution.
  7. Complete required publication distribution.
  8. Maintain the in-house publication database.
  9. Administer RPTS for NEFSC users
  10. Serve on the NOAA and NOAA Fisheries RPTS User Groups
  11. Full or part time telework eligible position, contingent on having appropriate, secure computer equipment at the remote location and appropriate, secure access to government computer systems from the remote location.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree or equivalent, full-performance level knowledge of the theories, principles, and methods of technical editing and writing.
  • At least 5 years of experience executing these skills working with manuscripts in a natural science field.
  • Technical editing knowledge and skills to execute full editorial control of a publication series, to instruct others in technical writing, and to manage in-house standards for publication production including style, usage, distribution, documentation, and 508 compliance.

Salary range is $75,000 - $85,000 annually, dependent upon experience.
