Position Title: Cardiothoracic Surgeon
Department: Surgery / Cardiothoracic Services
Reports To: Chief of Surgery / Medical Director

Position Summary:

The Cardiothoracic Surgeon is responsible for diagnosing and surgically treating diseases and conditions of the heart, lungs, esophagus, and major blood vessels within the chest cavity. This role requires advanced surgical expertise, strong decision-making skills, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team to deliver high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform complex surgical procedures including cardiac bypass, valve repair/replacement, thoracic aneurysm repair, lung resections, and other cardiothoracic operations.

  • Evaluate patients through exams, diagnostic tests, imaging, and consultations.

  • Develop individualized surgical treatment plans and discuss risks, benefits, and expectations with patients and families.

  • Manage pre-operative and post-operative care, including ICU oversight and follow-up visits.

  • Collaborate with anesthesiologists, perfusionists, nurses, and other specialists to ensure safe and effective surgical outcomes.

  • Utilize minimally invasive or robotic-assisted surgical techniques when appropriate.

  • Respond to emergencies such as traumatic chest injuries, cardiac complications, and acute thoracic conditions.

  • Maintain accurate documentation, operative reports, and patient records.

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, research, and continuing education to remain current in surgical advancements.

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to residents, fellows, and medical staff as needed.

Qualifications:

  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school.

  • Completion of a residency in General Surgery.

  • Completion of a Cardiothoracic Surgery fellowship.

  • Board certified or board eligible in Cardiothoracic Surgery.

  • Active, unrestricted state medical license (or ability to obtain).

  • Current ACLS and BLS certification.

  • Strong technical skills, attention to detail, and ability to perform under pressure.

Work Environment & Schedule:

  • Hospital-based setting (operating room, ICU, clinic).

  • Rotating on-call responsibilities, including nights, weekends, and emergencies.

  • May involve long surgical hours and physically demanding procedures.

A hospital in eastern South Carolina has an opportunity for a skilled Cardiothoracic Surgeon to provide locum coverage.

Opportunity Details:

  • Schedule: 24-hour call shifts, specific dates
  • Required Procedures: CABG, aneurysm repair, and heart valve replacement
  • EMR: Epic
  • Must be board-certified
  • Paid travel & expenses
