This hands-on position works closely with field personnel and operations teams to implement and manage a proactive, behavior-based health and safety program that emphasizes personal responsibility, incident prevention, and a management systems approach to compliance. The Safety Coordinator conducts health and safety assessments, audits, and risk evaluations to support effective and sustainable implementation of regulatory and company requirements, while also leading training initiatives and fostering a strong safety culture on all project sites.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive safety audits and hazard analyses of project operations to identify risks and ensure compliance with regulatory and company standards.
  • Assist in updating, maintaining, and improving the company safety manual to reflect current regulations, best practices, and project needs.
  • Provide and support safety training programs, including New Hire Orientation, CPR/First Aid, OSHA 10, Competent Person, and Asbestos training as needed.
  • Maintain a strong focus on OSHA compliance and the creation of the safest possible workplace across all assigned projects.
  • Engage daily with field personnel and the management team in a hands-on capacity to promote safe work practices and address safety concerns in real time.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure adherence to all relevant regulations, laws, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Track employee development and on-the-job training (OJT) to verify that employees are learning and applying the skills required to perform their jobs safely and effectively.
  • Work with supervisors and personnel to ensure appropriate and safe job placement and assignment based on skills and qualifications.
  • Foster a collaborative team environment when advising on safety corrections, focusing on constructive feedback and continuous improvement.
  • Build and maintain positive, productive working relationships with customer representatives, ensuring satisfaction with safe work practices and promptly addressing any issues that arise.
  • Develop and deliver safety and compliance training tailored to business needs, including initial and refresher courses, and maintain all related documentation such as training records, outlines, and schedules.
  • Promote and champion corporate training systems and services, demonstrating a strong commitment to safety and quality throughout the organization.
  • Evaluate, organize, and maintain inspection and testing reports to support ongoing compliance and quality assurance efforts.
  • Assist in the process, maintenance, and recordkeeping of incidents, including near-misses, to support trend analysis and corrective actions.
  • Prepare, schedule, and conduct regular QA/QC crew audits to monitor performance and adherence to safety and quality standards.
  • Assist with Operator Qualification (OQ) training and evaluating activities when needed to ensure personnel meet required competency standards.
  • Maintain and continuously develop knowledge of gas distribution, pipeline, and underground safety practices and regulations.
  • Provide technical assistance in the investigation of accidents, incidents, injuries, and illnesses, and contribute to root cause analysis and corrective action plans.
  • Coordinate and communicate safety-related information effectively across company and department lines to ensure consistent understanding and implementation of safety policies.
  • Travel throughout the United States, as required, to support project sites and safety initiatives.
  • Perform other safety-related duties as assigned to support the overall health, safety, and quality objectives of the organization.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of verifiable safety experience preferred in construction, utilities, or related environments.
  • OSHA 500 certification or other accredited safety certification such as CSP, ASP, OHS, CHST, CSST, or CSHO, and/or a Bachelor’s degree in a safety-related curriculum.
  • Strong presentation skills with experience leading regular safety meetings and training sessions.
  • Experience conducting quality assurance audits in the natural gas and public utility industry.
  • Ability to identify and document proper and improper practices on natural gas job sites in accordance with established audit metrics.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical assistance during investigations of accidents, incidents, injuries, and illnesses.
  • Proven experience coordinating and communicating safety information across company and department lines.
  • Familiarity with construction and power delivery environments, including transmission line (TLINE), distribution, and substation work.
  • Ability to work hands-on in field environments and interact effectively with field personnel and management.
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout the United States to support project needs.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • CUSP (Certified Utility Safety Professional) certification is highly valued and will receive elevated consideration, as it demonstrates strong, relevant experience for this role.
  • Experience working on gas distribution, pipeline, and underground projects.
  • Experience in safety coordination for power delivery projects, including transmission line, distribution, and substation operations.
  • Experience developing and maintaining safety manuals, policies, and training documentation.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with customers and stakeholders, with a focus on safety and quality.
  • Ability to promote and support corporate training systems and services related to safety and quality.
  • Comfort working in a behavior-based safety environment that emphasizes personal responsibility and proactive incident prevention.
