POSITION TITLE: PATIENT CARE ASSISTANT (PCA)

RESPONSIBLE TO: Chief Radiation Therapist, Asst. Chief Therapist,

and/or Director of Operations

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for assisting the staff therapists with the general flow of daily treatment patients. This position is also responsible for the coordination and construction of all blocks cut for patients undergoing radiation therapy. This position may also require assisting in other facilities and/or other departments.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Some responsibilities are facility-dependent. Check with the Chief Therapist at the facility when clarification is needed.

A. DAILY

  1. Obtain all treatment patients from lobby and escort them to dressing rooms or treatment machines.
  1. Assure that patients change into treatment gowns and assist patient with changing when necessary.
  1. Pull patient chart indicating they are ready for treatment and file charts when patient treatment completed. Locate charts as needed.
  1. Assist patients in and out of the facility as needed.
  1. Assist in the transferring of patients safely from wheel chairs, stretchers, etc., to and from the treatment table. Requires lifting, pulling, pushing, and supporting (Patients may weigh up to 250 pounds or more).
  1. Notify appropriate person of non-working or problem equipment.
  1. Maintain dressing room area in a clean and orderly fashion.
  1. Take charts to other departments when necessary.
  1. Remain in treatment area when not busy with other duties.
  1. Report any questions or concerns related to Medicare billing compliance issues to the appropriate person.
  1. Take pre/post blood pressures for treatment patients.

12. Assist person on kitchen duty daily:

Restock sodas/water in cooler.

Load /unload dishwasher.

All other kitchen duties as assigned per facility.

13. All other duties as assigned.

B. BLOCKCUTTING

  1. The precise construction of specialized devices for each patient requiring blocks during their course of radiation therapy.
  2. Daily knowledge of simulation and treatment machine schedules. Including, but not limited to: awareness of start times for new patients; awareness of schedule changes on a day to day basis; and awareness of cone down, boost and reduction due dates. Complete quality checklist as appropriate.
  3. Responsible for blocks cut and delivered to appropriate machine in a timely manner. Requires ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds when moving cerrobend. Hours of work may vary based on patient population and time of year.
  4. Responsible for ordering sufficient Styrofoam and cerrobend to meet the demands of the case load.
  5. Responsible for photo documentation of blocks cut.
  6. Responsible for cleanliness of block cutting area. These requirements are outlined in block cutters policy and procedure manual.
  7. Responsible for following safety requirements as outlined in block cutters policy and procedure manual.
  8. May be called upon to assist in minor office maintenance projects.
  9. Reports any questions or concerns related to Medicare billing compliance issues to the appropriate person.
  10. Responsible for making lead masks.


  1. Change patient gowns and launder all linens, (gowns, sheets, pillow cases, blankets, etc.).



  1. Weigh patients and escort them to exam rooms as needed.


Therapy Area:

Make up Goodie Bags.

Laundry:

Empty all gown baskets (sim rooms, men and women dressing area).

Empty wash cloth baskets in vaults

Bring charts from nurses’ station to machines.

Seasonal duties as needed.

Administration:

Make up New Patient Packets.

Make up “Your First Visit” Packets.

Nursing:

Assist as needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. High school graduate.
  1. Two years work experience in medical setting preferred, but not necessary.
  1. Excellent interpersonal relationship and communication skills.
  1. Good communication and prioritizing skills.
