Job Summary:
The Packaging Technician will support the Plant Manager, Sr. Packaging Engineer, and the sales/design team in the execution of packaging projects from concept to production. This role is responsible for preparing prototypes, conducting packaging tests, performing quality inspections, and maintaining accurate documentation. The Packaging Technician ensures that packaging designs are translated into reliable, cost-effective, and manufacturable solutions that meet customer and company requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare packaging samples and prototypes based on engineer specifications.
- Operate and maintain packaging equipment, including CNC cutting tables and testing machines.
- Conduct fit tests, drop tests, and other validation procedures according to ISTA, ASTM, FedEx, UPS, or customer-specific protocols.
- Document and report test results, prototype evaluations, and quality checks.
- Inspect first articles and production runs to confirm compliance with drawings and specifications.
- Assist in maintaining and updating packaging drawings, revisions, and BOMs in the ERP system (SAGE).
- Create raw material records in SAGE and support BOM setup under engineer supervision.
- Ensure safe, organized, and efficient handling of materials and prototypes.
- Communicate clearly with engineers, production staff, and sales teams regarding project status and findings.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to packaging efficiency, cost, and sustainability.
- Other duties may be assigned to meet business demand.
Objectives of this Role:
- Support the Packaging Engineer in the development, testing, and validation of packaging solutions.
- Build prototypes and samples using the CNC cutting table and other tools.
- Conduct packaging performance testing (drop, vibration, compression, fit checks) to validate designs.
- Provide feedback on manufacturability and quality of packaging solutions.
- Ensure documentation accuracy in drawings, specifications, and ERP (SAGE).
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Sales, Quality, Production, Purchasing, and Customer Service).
- Onsite - Office hours from 7:00am to 3:00pm, with occasional extended hours depending on project deadlines.
Requirements:
- Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent hands-on experience in packaging, manufacturing, or related technical field.
- 1–3 years of experience in packaging, manufacturing, or quality assurance (preferred).
- Basic knowledge of packaging materials (corrugated, foam, plastics, etc.) and fabrication methods.
- Familiarity with CAD systems is a plus.
- Hands-on experience with testing equipment (drop tester, vibration table, compression tester) preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Strong organizational skills and time management.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, work instructions, and specifications.
- Proficient with MS Office and ERP systems (experience with SAGE preferred).
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Bilingual (is a plus).
Work Environment:
- Ability to lift, pull, push up to 40 lbs. and handle packaging materials.
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- May involve exposure to varying temperatures, loud noises, or fast-paced operations.
- Requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Manual dexterity for equipment and tooling use.
REPORTING:
- This position reports to the Plant Manager.
