Job Description
Job DescriptionJob Title: Mechanical Designer
Job Description
This Mechanical Designer role focuses on designing complex medical devices that integrate electrical and mechanical systems, with a strong emphasis on injection molded components and capital equipment. You will contribute directly to the development of a state-of-the-art minimally invasive therapy device for treating prostate cancer, recognized with U.S. FDA Breakthrough Device Designation. The position involves concept ideation, detailed 3D modeling, drawing creation, and prototyping using SolidWorks within a highly collaborative engineering environment.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop medical device components and assemblies that integrate both electrical and mechanical systems.
- Create and refine 3D models and detailed engineering drawings using SolidWorks for components, assemblies, and fixtures.
- Ideate and sketch multiple design concepts, then translate them into component and assembly models suitable for manufacturing.
- Design injection molded parts, including the development of at least 10 or more components optimized for injection molding processes.
- Develop and refine fixturing solutions for test methods, laboratory equipment, and production/manufacturing applications.
- Integrate electrical and mechanical components into cohesive capital systems such as infusion pumps, imaging systems, ventilators, dialysis equipment, and other complex medical devices.
- Collaborate closely with engineers and technicians to communicate design concepts, ideas, sketches, and technical details clearly and effectively.
- Use CAD/drafting practices to support document change orders and maintain accurate design documentation.
- Leverage PDM tools to manage design files, revisions, and configuration control throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Support prototyping activities, including preparing models for 3D printing and evaluating design iterations.
- Apply strong electrical and mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot design challenges and improve system performance.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of design methods, reference geometry strategies, and best practices for complex assemblies.
Essential Skills
- CAD/drafting degree from a 2-year technical college or equivalent technical education.
- 3+ years of mechanical design experience.
- 2 to 5 years of hands-on SolidWorks experience.
- Product design experience with capital electrical and mechanical systems such as infusion pumps, CT, MRI, X-ray, ventilators, dialysis machines, or surgical equipment.
- Medical device design experience.
- Injection molded part design experience, including a history of designing at least 10 parts and preferably over 50 parts for injection molding.
- Extensive fixturing design experience for test methods, lab equipment, and production/manufacturing environments.
- Strong electrical and mechanical aptitude, with proven experience integrating electrical and mechanical components.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks, including component and assembly modeling and drawing creation.
- Experience using Product Data Management (PDM) systems.
- Ability to ideate and sketch different concepts and translate them into detailed 3D models and drawings.
- Ability to clearly communicate design concepts, ideas, and sketches to engineers and technicians.
- Experience supporting document change orders within a CAD/PDM environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience designing medical devices that have achieved or are pursuing regulatory recognition or special designations.
- Familiarity with Grand Avenue Software or similar tools used in medical device development and documentation.
- Experience working with master reference geometry strategies that link to multiple child parts in complex assemblies.
- Background in both electrical design and mechanical design within product development teams.
- Experience using 3D printing as a prototyping tool to validate and iterate designs.
- Comfort working on cross-functional teams in a highly collaborative engineering environment.
Work Environment
This role is 100% on-site in a highly collaborative engineering workspace. You will work closely with four other members of the Mechanical Team and partner frequently with engineers and technicians across disciplines. The environment includes access to a 3D printer for rapid prototyping and testing of designs, as well as modern CAD and PDM tools to support the full product development lifecycle. You will contribute directly to the development of an innovative medical device for minimally invasive prostate cancer therapy, within a setting that emphasizes teamwork, open communication, and hands-on problem solving.
