Job Summary: The Phlebotomy Technician (Donor) screens and evaluates blood donors by reviewing medical histories, documenting medications and travel, and performing vital sign checks to ensure eligibility in compliance with Food and Drug Administration regulations, AABB standards, and Armed Services Blood Program guidelines. Performs blood collection and apheresis procedures, monitors donors for adverse reactions, maintains blood bank equipment and records, and supports donor recruitment while ensuring safe products and a positive donor experience. This role is located in Honolulu, Hawaii at Tripler Army Medical Center.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: High school equivalent and completion of a donor Phlebotomy program accredited by The Joint Commission or American Society for Clinical Pathology (CAP).
  • Certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • Certification/registration as determined by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or AMT.
  • Experience: Must have performed 50 successful donor collections with an accredited laboratory with in last two years.

U.S. Citizenship is required

Key Responsibilities:

  • Documents all medication, medical conditions, and travel to determine eligibility of
    potential donors based on judgment and in accordance with Standard Operating
    Procedures and regulatory guidelines.
  • Comply with all CFR, Blood Services Directives, Blood Services Letters, Local Operating Procedures and Exposure Control Plan policies and procedures as well as all Red Cross philosophies, structures, policies and procedures.
  • Perform some phases of whole blood collection and donor care according to directives, the Code of Federal Regulations and local policies and procedures to ensure safe product and optimum donor experience.
  • Aids in apheresis procedures by processing human volunteer apheresis donors to
    include taking donor history, temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and hemoglobin.
    Conducts second overall assessment of donors.
  • Performs allogeneic and autologous whole blood collection procedures with 95% or
    greater rate of success and schedules whole blood, plasmapheresis, and plateletpheresis
    procedures.
  • Monitors donor during donation process and observes for possible donor adverse
    reaction (i.e. light headache, passing out, convulsing, etc.) and responds to donor
    reactions appropriately.
  • Recruit donors for future donation.

Work Environment & Schedule: Onsite, Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm

Compensation & Benefits: $22.01 per hour and $4.41 Health and Welfare (H&W)

Physical requirements: Lifting and moving equipment or supplies independently up to 30–50 lbs, such as blood boxes, supply containers, or mobile collection equipment. Frequent standing, walking, pending, reaching and twisting is required.
