About the Role:
We are seeking an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Medical Director who plays a critical leadership role in overseeing the clinical and operational aspects of pre-hospital emergency medical care within the United States. This contractor position is responsible for ensuring that EMS protocols, policies, and procedures meet the highest standards of medical quality and patient safety. The Medical Director collaborates closely with EMS providers, healthcare facilities, and regulatory agencies to promote continuous improvement in emergency medical services delivery. By providing expert medical oversight, education, and guidance, the Medical Director ensures that EMS personnel are equipped to deliver effective, evidence-based care in urgent and emergent situations. Ultimately, this role is pivotal in shaping the quality and effectiveness of emergency medical response systems to improve patient outcomes across diverse communities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must have experience as a Medical Director for a fire-based ambulance service that responds to 911 emergency medical calls and experience practicing advanced life support in a pre-hospital or emergency department setting.
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution.
- Board certification in Emergency Medicine or a related specialty recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).
- Current, active Tennessee physician’s license with no history of disciplinary action.
- Completion of formal training or fellowship in Emergency Medical Services or equivalent experience in EMS medical oversight.
- Demonstrated experience in clinical leadership, medical protocol development, and quality assurance within an EMS system.
- Must demonstrate recent or current involvement with local, state, and national EMS organizations.
- Must provide professional references, including past and current clients.
- Must demonstrate in-depth knowledge of local, state, and federal EMS regulations
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced certification in Prehospital Emergency Care or EMS Medical Direction (e.g., NAEMSP Medical Director Course).
- Experience working with diverse EMS systems, including urban, rural, and underserved populations.
- Familiarity with healthcare informatics and data management systems used in EMS quality improvement.
- Strong background in disaster medicine, mass casualty incident management, or public health emergency preparedness.
- Active participation in professional EMS organizations or committees at the state or national level.
Responsibilities:
- Must demonstrate involvement in EMS committees and recognized standing in the medical community.
- Must demonstrate an evidence-based, collaborative approach to EMS protocol development and review.
- Will hold consultations or interactions with regulatory and oversight agencies regarding EMS activities, including assistance in complaint investigations.
- Can assist in disaster response planning, pandemic health issues, weapons of mass destruction preparedness, anti-terrorism activities, and mass-casualty incident support.
- Develop, review, and approve EMS clinical protocols and treatment guidelines to ensure alignment with current medical standards and best practices.
- Provide medical oversight and direction to EMS personnel, including paramedics, EMTs, and other pre-hospital care providers.
- Conduct regular training, education, and quality assurance programs to maintain high levels of clinical competency and compliance among EMS staff.
- Collaborate with hospitals, public health agencies, and emergency response organizations to coordinate patient care and system-wide emergency preparedness.
- Review and analyze EMS clinical data and patient outcomes to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Serve as a liaison with state and local regulatory bodies to ensure EMS operations comply with legal and accreditation requirements.
- Participate in community outreach and public education initiatives to enhance awareness of emergency medical services and preventive health measures.
