Essential Duties and Responsibilities
A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) on a skilled short-term stay unit (rehabilitation/sub-acute unit) provides essential, hands-on care to patients recovering from surgery, injury, or acute illness. The focus is on rapid recovery, rehabilitation, and preparing patients to return home.
- Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Assisting patients with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and hygiene while fostering independence.
- Mobility & Transfers: Safely transferring patients (e.g., bed to wheelchair) using proper techniques (lifts, sliding boards) and encouraging mobility exercises prescribed by physical therapists.
- Vital Signs Monitoring: Measuring and recording blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, and temperature, and reporting changes to the nursing team.
- Rehabilitation Support: Assisting with therapy-prescribed exercises, encouraging patients to meet rehab goals, and helping with adaptive equipment.
- Clinical Documentation: Accurately documenting patient care activities, such as input/output (fluids), meal intake, and changes in condition, in Electronic Health Records (EMR).
- Patient Comfort & Safety: Answering call lights promptly, turning/repositioning bedridden patients, changing linens, and maintaining a clean, orderly, and safe environment.
- Admissions & Discharges: Assisting with the intake of new patients and preparing for discharge.
Requirements:
- Certification: Active CNA certification in the state of Virginia.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Previous experience in skilled nursing/rehab is preferred.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for long periods and lift, turn, move, and position patients.
- Skills: Strong communication skills, empathy, ability to work on an interdisciplinary team, and basic computer proficiency for charting.
