Nurse Manager, Telemetry unit and Inpatient IV therapy

Full time, days, exempt position

JOB SUMMARY:

Under Nursing Leadership direction, the Nurse Manager is accountable for the delivery of patient care services which support the strategic plan of the organization and achieves clinical, financial and service quality objectives in one or more clinical units or care delivery sites in accordance within the scope of practice, professional, and regulatory standards. This role is accountable for the quality of clinical services delivered for the competency and performance of nursing team members and for designating and maintaining systems to support interdisciplinary team functioning.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

1. Develops, manages and evaluates the system of care delivery and clinical services for areas of responsibility which meets clinical, financial and service quality objectives. This includes but is not limited to managing the unit’s supplies and equipment in such a way as to achieve both expected patient outcomes and expense compliance.
2. In collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, assesses requirements for care delivery systems to meet the patient population requirements. Plans strategies and services to meet clinical program objectives. Communicates long and short-term plans and objectives to team members.
3. Ensures excellence of clinical practice and patient care services, including meeting or exceeding patient requirements, improving clinical outcomes and achieving productivity and expense reduction goals. while assuring units compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, standards, and laws pertaining to patient safety and privacy. Provides ongoing oversight and assures team member performance is meeting regulatory requirements and professional standards.
4. Ensures that the unit’s environment of care, as defined by The Joint Commission and by UM UCH, is monitored and maintained
5. Coaching and Developing: Fosters professional and personal development. Nurtures individual strengths and abilities to develop employee skill sets.
6. Collaboration and Teamwork: Builds teamwork and participation. Works together to bring out the best in everyone. Provides useful, caring feedback for growth to team.
7. Participates in the collection of quality assurance, performance improvement, and patient safety data on an ongoing basis. Assists with the analysis and development of plans for improvement.
8. Acts as a resource to unit team members in the coordination and management of patient care activities.
9. Directs systems for recruitment, selection, orientation, competency validation, professional development, ongoing education and staff recognition.
10. Creates effective performance management systems which provide clear expectations to staff in all roles, support staff participation in peer feedback and effectively address individual and group performance outcomes. Evaluates team member performance and reviews performance with leadership as appropriate.
11. Participates in unit-based and division committees and task forces.
12. Responds to Event Tracking events.
13. Facilitates the mobilization of internal and external resources that facilitate patient flow through the hospital and health system.
14. Demonstrates interpersonal skills and appropriate clinical competence in the care of: neonatal, infant, toddler, preschool-aged, school-aged, adolescent, adult, and elderly patients within the established scope of nursing practice in the State of Maryland.
15. Responsible for the proper interviewing and selection of new team members.
16. Provides oversight for the staffing and scheduling committee, paying particular attention to the preparation of an appropriate schedule. Supervises daily staffing levels with charge RN and ensures consistency with established staffing standards, census, and patients’ acuity.
17. Enters payroll data, maintains attendance records, and updates and maintains the position control document. Approved team member schedules and payroll entries.
18. Collaborates with the nursing leader educator to assess and oversee the learning needs of the unit'’ team members”, including orientation, and participates in developing or facilitating continuing education and professional development learning opportunities.
19. Adapts work hours as appropriate to the variable and changing needs of the unit and its team members, and of the hospital, as a whole.
20. Takes appropriate coaching and disciplinary action. Reviews these actions with leader and Human Resources when appropriate.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  2. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligibility for licensure due to Compact state agreement outlined through the MD Board of Nursing is required.
  3. BSN required. Master’s degree preferred.
  4. BCLS certification is required. ACLS certification is preferred.
  5. Nursing Administration or clinical certification preferred.
  6. Minimum of three (3) years of recent nursing experience in an acute care setting; including one (1) year Charge Nurse experience. Proven clinical competence and proficiency in the area of specialty is required.

Skills & Abilities:

  1. Highly proficient skills in directing, managing and coaching the work of supervisory, clinical and support team members; assigning work priorities; auditing work quality; orienting, educating and implementing professional standards.
  2. Ability to analyze data.
  3. Demonstrated/documented highly effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  4. Demonstrated excellent customer relations skills.
  5. Ability to learn and apply computer systems in order to manage patient information.
  6. Ability to:
    1. prioritize work assignments and complete duties within prescribed time frames;
    2. establish and maintain positive working relationships and open lines of communication with a variety of people;
    3. make independent decisions;
    4. demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills;
    5. demonstrate the following skills: planning, decision-making, delegating and coaching; and
    6. Manages effectively in a constantly-changing, high-pressure environment.
