Job Duties

The Oncology RN is responsible for performing patient assessment, patient/family teaching and triage as well as direct patient care including chemotherapy, biologic therapy and other therapeutic infusions and order entry. Provides clinical support to the provider, patient and their family to assist in the treatment of the patient's condition. Follows up on diagnostic testing to ensure completion, accuracy, and filing of same in medical record to ensure continuity and quality of care.

This union role is 40 hours weekly; hours will be discussed during interview. Alternating weekends with major holidays off.

Job Duties:

  • Assists provider in performance of minor surgical diagnostic procedures and ancillary diagnostic examinations as directed by provider to facilitate accurate diagnosis.
  • Collects and prepares laboratory specimens and completes associated paperwork.
  • Accesses implanted venous access devices for labs and infusions.
  • Administers and disposes of chemotherapy as required by regulatory guidelines.
  • Documents administration of chemotherapy.
  • Administers and follows related research protocols.
  • Executes and documents ongoing patient communication.
  • Delivers advanced phone triage per provider, responds to patient questions and requests to ensure efficient use of provider time and timely response to patient's needs.
  • Provides instruction to ensure patient's understanding of medical condition and compliance with treatment guidelines.
  • Inserts, monitors, regulates and discontinues IV's as required by provider.
  • Administers medications and vaccines including intradermal and skin testing.
  • May inventory medical and surgical supplies, pharmaceutical and controlled substances to ensure adequate supply levels, verify expiration dates, document utilization, and optimize organizational efficiency and space utilization.
  • Routinely inspects and observes condition and operation of equipment and instrumentation to ensure proper operation and identify need for preventive and corrective maintenance.
  • Cleans and sets up examination and treatment rooms between cases, ensures required level of asepsis, availability of appropriate instruments and equipment, and preparation of patient.
  • Assists with orientation of new personnel to ensure that they are appropriately trained to support patients and provider.
  • Assists with coordinating external disease management and case management organizations.
  • Completes apheresis for stem cell collections if designated as one of the stem cell collection Hematology and Oncology Registered Nurses.
