Position Summary

The Manual Machinist will operate manual lathes and related shop equipment to perform precision machining, turning, facing, and repair operations on aircraft engine components. This role supports engine overhaul production and component repair workflows, ensuring compliance with aviation standards and customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Machining & Technical Duties

  • Set up and operate manual engine lathes, vertical lathes, and precision turning equipment.
  • Machine, cut, bore, thread, and finish aircraft components to exact tolerances.
  • Safely handle and fixture aircraft engine parts, shafts, housings, and alloy components.
  • Work from blueprints, technical drawings, and OEM specifications.
  • Use precision inspection tools (micrometers, dial indicators, bore gauges, height gauges, surface plates).
  • Perform finishing operations and ensure all machining meets dimensional, surface finish, and tolerance requirements.
  • Assist engineering with repair development, dimensional checks, and machining plans.
  • Maintain machine calibration, cleanliness, and tooling condition.

Documentation & Quality

  • Record machining dimensions and maintain job travelers, routers, and quality documentation.
  • Follow FAA/EASA repair station procedures and support AS9100/ISO quality program.
  • Ensure proper part tagging, traceability, and FOD/Clean-as-you-go compliance.

Safety & Continuous Improvement

  • Operate shop equipment safely and follow PPE & HSE requirements.
  • Support process improvements, tooling upgrades, and machine shop efficiency.

Qualifications

Required

  • 3+ years experience operating manual lathes in aerospace, industrial, or precision machining environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, tolerances, and GD&T.
  • Experience machining high-temperature alloys (Inconel, Titanium, Stainless Steel).
  • Precision measurement capability to ±.0005” tolerances.
  • Strong focus on safety and quality.

Preferred

  • Aviation engine repair or turbine engine experience (CFM56/CF6 exposure a plus).
  • Experience with grinders, mills, or horizontal lathes.
  • Basic CNC knowledge helpful but not required.
  • Familiarity with aviation quality requirements / Part 145 environment.
