A Histotechnologist is a laboratory professional specializing in preparing tissue samples for microscopic examination by pathologists. This role involves processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining biological tissues to aid in the diagnosis of diseases. Histotechnologists ensure the highest quality of tissue slides and follow rigorous standards to maintain accuracy, safety, and efficiency in the laboratory setting.

\n\nKey Responsibilities:\n

  • Perform grossing, processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining of tissue samples for microscopic analysis.
  • \n

  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including tissue processors, microtomes, and automated stainers.
  • \n

  • Adhere to laboratory protocols to ensure optimal sample preparation and prevent cross-contamination.
  • \n

  • Utilize specialized staining techniques, such as immunohistochemistry (IHC) or special stains, to highlight specific tissue components.
  • \n

  • Review tissue slides for quality assurance before submission to pathologists for diagnosis.
  • \n

  • Manage laboratory inventory, including ordering and stocking reagents, chemicals, and supplies.
  • \n

  • Maintain accurate records of specimen handling, processing, and results in compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • \n

  • Follow all safety protocols for handling biological specimens, chemicals, and hazardous materials.
  • \n

  • Troubleshoot technical issues with equipment or procedures to ensure timely sample processing.
  • \n

  • Participate in laboratory inspections and maintain compliance with CLIA, CAP, and other regulatory standards.

\n\nQualifications:\n

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Histotechnology, Biology, or a related field. Completion of a NAACLS-accredited histotechnology program is preferred.
  • \n

  • Certification: Certification as a Histotechnologist (HTL) or Histotechnician (HT) through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is required.
  • \n

  • Experience: Prior experience in a histology lab is preferred, though entry-level candidates with the necessary training may be considered.
