Vice President, Government Relations

Location: Washington, DC (Hybrid)
Travel: Some travel required


Position Summary

A leading national conservation nonprofit seeks a Vice President of Government Relations to lead federal advocacy strategy and oversee congressional and Executive Branch engagement. This executive will direct legislative and administrative campaigns, manage advocacy staff and budgets, ensure compliance with federal lobbying laws, and strengthen relationships with policymakers, coalition partners, media, and stakeholders.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute federal legislative and administrative advocacy strategy
  • Build and maintain relationships with Congress, the White House, and federal agencies
  • Oversee a team of lobbyists and grassroots outreach professionals (multiple management layers)
  • Develop priority policy objectives and allocate resources to advance them
  • Direct grassroots lobbying and national outreach initiatives
  • Ensure compliance with federal lobbying, reporting, and ethics requirements
  • Represent the organization in coalitions, hearings, press events, and public forums
  • Present updates and strategy to executive leadership and Board of Directors
  • Collaborate with communications and development teams on media and funding initiatives


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Environmental law, wildlife policy, or conservation background required
  • 15+ years of experience in government relations or federal advocacy
  • 7+ years supervisory experience; experience managing multiple layers of staff
  • Grassroots organizing and coalition leadership
  • Deep knowledge of the federal legislative process and lobbying regulations
  • Experience drafting testimony and legislative materials
  • Experience within national nonprofit or environmental organizations preferred
  • Strong leadership, strategic planning, budgeting, and organizational management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including media engagement
