Job Description

Role Summary

As a Graphic Artist / Photo Editor at Memory Portraits, you will take client-supplied photographs (often scanned, old, or damaged) and transform them into polished, print-ready memorial portraits. This might include restoring damaged photos, removing distractions, improving lighting, compositing, reconstructing missing elements, colorizing black & white images, and preparing final files for printing or framing.

You will collaborate with funeral home clients, internal production staff, and designers to ensure each portrait meets high quality, respectful standards, and is delivered on schedule.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive and evaluate incoming photo/photo scan requests from clients/funeral homes

  • Retouch, restore, and enhance images using Adobe Photoshop (and related tools)

  • Remove imperfections, scratches, blemishes, unwanted objects, or background distractions

  • Composite or reconstruct parts of images (recreate missing areas, repair damaged areas)

  • Apply color correction, colorization (when converting B&W to color, if needed), tonal balance, and lighting adjustments

  • Create and/or adjust custom backgrounds or frames as needed, per style guidelines

  • Adhere to specific portrait styles (e.g. Old World, Studio, Black & White, Collage) as defined by our brand standards

  • Prepare final high-resolution files optimized for printing (correct color profile, bleed, DPI, format)

  • Manage workload and deadlines — often a fast turnaround is required

  • Maintain organized project files and version control

  • Provide occasional input or feedback to improve workflow, templates, or process efficiencies

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Proven experience (2+ years preferred) as a photo editor / retoucher / graphic artist

  • Expert-level skills in Adobe Photoshop (layers, masking, clone/heal tools, blending, selection, color correction, compositing)

  • Proficiency with complementary tools (Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Bridge, or other image management software)

  • Solid understanding of printing principles: DPI, color profiles (RGB, CMYK), bleed, file formatting

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain high quality under pressure

  • Artistic eye for composition, lighting, color harmony, and aesthetics

  • Ability to work with imperfect source materials (scanned photos, damaged prints) and problem-solve creatively

  • Strong time management and ability to meet deadlines

  • Good communication skills, ability to receive critique and iterate quickly

  • Must be local and able to work on-site (for training, collaboration, and access to physical proofing or printing as needed)

Preferred / Desirable

  • Formal education in Graphic Design, Photography, Digital Imaging, or a related field

  • Past experience working on memorial, portrait, or photo restoration projects

  • Experience with batch processing, actions, scripts, or automation in Photoshop

Certifications & Portfolio Requirements

  • Portfolio (online or physical) showing examples of advanced photo retouching, restoration, compositing, and portraits

  • Samples should clearly show “before” and “after” images

  • Any certifications in Adobe suite, digital imaging, or photo restoration are a plus (e.g. Adobe Certified Expert)

  • (Optional but valued) Continuing education or workshops in photo restoration, digital painting, or retouching

Working Conditions & Expectations

  • Standard office hours, with some flexibility — may occasionally require rush work or overtime to meet deadlines

  • On-site presence required; remote work is not acceptable for core editing tasks

  • Use of calibrated monitors, color-accurate proofing environment, and industry-standard hardware

  • Handle sensitive, emotional subject matter with respect, discretion, and sensitivity

  • Maintain confidentiality of client images and personal data at all times
