Job DescriptionChief of Mental Health Primary Care Section - Join Us in Scenic Tucson, Arizona

Position Overview:

Our organization is on the lookout for a full-time supervisory primary care physician to lead and deliver exceptional services within our dynamic, innovative, and interdisciplinary healthcare system, specifically catering to the Veteran outpatient community at our main facility in Tucson.

    • Acts as the Section Chief, clinic director, and primary care physician for the Mental Health Primary Care section.
    • Collaborates closely with the Clinical Nurse Manager of Mental Health Primary Care.
    • Directly supervises a team of seven interdisciplinary healthcare professionals, overseeing four Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACT) that serve Veterans with serious mental health issues and/or homelessness (three SMI-PACT and one H-PACT), while also providing outpatient primary care to a varied patient demographic as part of a skilled interdisciplinary team integrated within Mental Health.
    • Provides both administrative and clinical supervision to Mental Health Primary Care staff, including evaluations, productivity assessments, and management of time and leave, while also evaluating and treating Veterans and offering consultations to colleagues in both primary care and mental health.
    • Exhibits a strong dedication to Veteran-centered care, addressing the co-occurring mental health and medical needs of Veterans, along with a passion for teaching and excellent interpersonal skills aimed at leadership.

Work Schedule: Full-time, permanent position, Monday to Friday, from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

Qualifications:

  • Must hold board certification in family medicine or internal medicine.
  • Must possess an active and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state.
  • Doctor of Medicine degree or an equivalent qualification from an accredited medical or osteopathic institution.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Experience in a leadership role as a physician.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in mental health.

Compensation and Benefits:

We offer a comprehensive total rewards package.

Salary: Competitive salary, annual performance bonuses, and regular salary increases.

Annual salary range: $260,000 - $290,000.

Paid Time Off: Receive 50–55 days of paid time off annually, which includes 26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and potentially 5 days for continuing medical education (CME).

Retirement Benefits: Includes a traditional federal pension (with a 5-year vesting period) and a federal 401k plan with contributions of up to 5% from the organization.

Insurance Coverage: Access to federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care insurance (many federal insurance options can be continued into retirement).

CME Reimbursement: Eligible for up to $1,000 reimbursement per year.

Malpractice Coverage: Liability protection is provided at no cost, including tail coverage.

Contractual Terms: No employment contract for physicians and minimal restrictions on moonlighting.

The Tucson VA Medical Center is a 295-bed facility that offers training, primary care, and specialized healthcare across various medical fields for eligible Veterans. It serves as the ‘Flagship’ of the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System, which supports over 170,000 Veterans across eight counties in Southern Arizona, including the medical center in Tucson and seven Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Casa Grande, Green Valley, Safford, Sierra Vista, Yuma, Northwest, and Southeast Tucson.
