Legal Translator, Editor, and /or Transcriber - Yiddish to/from English - Remote
Status: Freelance / Contractor
Global Language Strategies, a business headquartered in the Washington DC metropolitan region, is currently seeking a professional freelance translator, editor, and/or transcriber to translate, edit, and/or transcribe legal documents between English and Yiddish.
Job Duties: Yiddish <> English
1) Provide accurate translation of documents and/or transcription of audio files involving law enforcement and legal subject matter from Yiddish to English or vice versa.
2) Edit audio transcriptions with slang and idioms.
3) Edit legal documents, such as affidavits, depositions, etc., while demonstrating a strong command of legal terminology in both English and the target language.
4) Excellent written communication skills in English and the target foreign language, with Advanced Proficiency (reading/speaking/listening, writing) level 3-plus in English and the foreign target language, as assessed by the International Language Roundtable (ILR) scale.
5) Translate and/or transcribe following the government clients style guides and quality standards.
6) Use domain-specific terminology.
7) Review and certify the quality of other translators work, as needed.
8) Highly proficient in MS Office, with the ability to mirror source document format in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
9) Familiar with the use of CAT tools, such as Trados Studio.
10) Abide by a code of ethics when performing transcription and translation work.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
1) Willing to undergo a U.S. government background check to obtain a Public Trust Clearance Moderate Level.
2) Bachelors degree or equivalent experience.
3) At least 3 years experience in translating and/or editing between English and Yiddish.
4) At least 3 years experience performing audio transcription with the ability to use software to enhance sound and equipment to aid in transcription.
5) Familiar with legal terminology in both English and the target foreign language(s).
5) Proficient in Microsoft Office.
6) Translators and editors must proficiently use CAT tools, such as SDL Trados.
