Job Summary

We are seeking a Wet Processing or Electroplating Chemist to join our nanofabrication team. This position is responsible for overseeing chemical control of electroplating and wet chemistry process operations. This includes electroplating bath maintenance, wet chemical analysis, waste treatment oversight, and preparation of acids, bases, and other process solutions. The chemist ensures stable plating performance, environmental compliance, and safe chemical management practices across operations. This position is manufacturing product 75% of the time. This position will work side by side with the existing process owner who is promoting to another project. They will train on techniques and proven processes from this person over weeks while slowly taking over ownership and offering improvements as time goes on. This position has the unusual benefit of the existing process owner available for training and questions as the responsibility shifts. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily and weekly analysis of plating baths (nickel, gold, cobalt, copper, etc.) using titration, spectroscopy, and pH/conductivity measurement.
  • Maintain chemical balance and prescribe corrective additions to ensure bath stability and product quality.
  • Prepare new acid, base, and buffer solutions for production lines and laboratory testing.
  • Monitor chemical concentrations, temperature, and agitation rates to sustain plating consistency.
  • Manage hazardous waste accumulation areas, perform waste segregation, label drums, and coordinate disposal in compliance with EPA, RCRA, and local regulations.
  • Maintain chemical inventory, track expiration dates, and ensure appropriate storage and labeling of acids, caustics, and solvents.
  • Operate and calibrate laboratory testing equipment (pH meters, analytical balances, spectrophotometers).
  • Maintain documentation for chemical analysis, waste manifests, and SDS compliance.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to optimize bath life, reduce waste, and minimize environmental impact.
  • Collaborate with production engineers to troubleshoot plating defects (adhesion, porosity, color variation).
  • Train technicians on safe handling of acids, bases, and cyanide or heavy-metal-containing solutions


Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field (Associate degree with experience acceptable).
  • 25 years of experience in electroplating, surface finishing, or wet chemical processing.
  • Strong knowledge of inorganic chemistry, electrochemistry, and acid/base reactions.
  • Familiarity with EPA hazardous waste management and wastewater treatment chemistry.
  • Experience with analytical techniques such as titration, XRF, AAS, or ICP preferred.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and laboratory data systems for recording and reporting.
  • Demonstrated adherence to safety protocols and use of PPE in laboratory or plating environments


Required Skills and Attributes

  • Not bothered by the smell of non-harmful fumes of the job, such as Acetic Acid (vinegar smell), Acetone, IPA.
  • Maintain the highest degree of documentation honesty and integrity that is paramount to quick root cause analysis and process controls.
  • Ability to pay attention to processing details and to double check oneself several times an hour.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds while wearing PPE.
  • Crisp communication skills, with the ability to present ideas clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven team player who thrives in collaborative settings and contributes to group problem-solving.
  • Optimistic, trusting and sincere in ones team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and engineering analysis tools (e.g., FEA software).
