Dog Trainer (North Phoenix, AZ)
About the Role:
We're looking for a motivated Dog Trainer to join our team in North Phoenix, AZ. This role is ideal for an experienced trainer who enjoys helping dogs and their owners succeed through clear communication, consistency, and positive training methods. Prior leadership/management experience in a training or pet care setting is a plus, and we're also open to trainers who are interested in growing into a lead or management track.
Pay: Negotiable based on experience - $25+/hr.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct private training sessions and/or group classes (based on business needs)
- Evaluate dog behavior and create customized training plans
- Coach pet parents on proper handling, reinforcement, and at-home follow-through
- Implement training using humane, effective methods (positive reinforcement preferred)
- Track progress and maintain clear session notes and recommendations
- Support behavior modification plans for common issues (leash pulling, reactivity, barking, jumping, basic manners, etc.)
- Maintain a safe, clean training environment and follow safety protocols
- Collaborate with staff to ensure consistent handling and customer experience
Leadership Opportunity (Preferred, Not Required)
Depending on experience and interest, this role may include:
- Mentoring junior trainers or assisting with onboarding
- Helping standardize training plans, class formats, and customer communication
- Supporting scheduling, class rosters, and quality control
- Contributing to team development and operational improvements
(Leadership responsibilities are flexible and can grow over time.)
Qualifications:
- Experience training dogs in a professional, volunteer, or structured environment
- Strong customer service and communication skills (you'll be coaching people as much as dogs)
- Working knowledge of basic obedience training and common behavior challenges
- Reliable transportation and ability to work a flexible schedule (evenings/weekends may be needed)
Preferred (not required):
- Previous leadership/management experience in dog training, boarding/daycare, grooming, or pet retail
- Certifications such as CPDT-KA, KPA-CTP, IAABC, or similar
- Group class instruction experience
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and handle dogs of various sizes/temperaments
- Comfortable working indoors/outdoors depending on season and training setup
