Job DescriptionJob Title: Robotics Automation Engineer – Automotive Manufacturing
Job Description

This role focuses on inspecting, validating, and preparing new or modified robotic and automation equipment for high-volume automotive manufacturing. The engineer programs and interlocks robots on-site, supports body weld and paint shop operations from installation through start of production, and develops effective countermeasures during equipment setup and trials to ensure safety, quality, and efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and confirm new or modified equipment to ensure it meets established standards and performs as intended in a production environment.
  • Prepare and validate new body weld equipment at vendor locations prior to installation in manufacturing facilities.
  • Perform on-site robot programming and interlocking, with a focus on automotive body weld and paint shop applications.
  • Support weld machine activities at North American manufacturing facilities from initial installation through start of production.
  • Develop and implement equipment countermeasures during setup and trial phases to address quality, safety, and performance issues.
  • Plan and coordinate weekend work activities to support installations, trials, and production changes.
  • Develop and refine robotic programs to optimize cycle time, quality, and reliability.
  • Run quality trials before, during, and after production shifts to verify equipment performance and product quality.
  • Support maintenance teams during major equipment breakdowns as a subject-matter expert on robotics and automation systems.
  • Collect, analyze, and track data related to equipment performance and quality adjustments, and use this data to drive continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, production, digital engineering, and pilot teams to support model launches, new equipment installations, and cost-saving initiatives.
  • Communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization, from production team members on the floor to upper management.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in automation, mechatronics, and robotics within a manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience with industrial robots, including robot programming and interlocking.
  • Proficiency with Fanuc robots or similar industrial robotic platforms.
  • Experience with PLC programming and troubleshooting in an industrial setting.
  • Background in body weld or paint shop automation in the automotive industry.
  • 3+ years of automotive industry experience.
  • Experience as a maintenance technician or in a similar technical support role for production equipment.
  • Ability to develop and adjust robotic programs to meet quality and production requirements.
  • Experience with mentoring and/or delivering technical training to others.
  • Degree in an Industrial Maintenance–related field or closely related technical discipline.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 1+ years of experience working within a production engineering or similar environment in automotive manufacturing.
  • Experience supporting model launches, new equipment installations, and cost-saving projects in a plant setting.
  • Familiarity with data collection and analysis for quality and process improvement.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams such as systems engineering, digital engineering, production pilot, and production engineering.
  • Strong communication skills to interact effectively with production team members, engineering staff, and upper management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast-paced, project-driven environment while maintaining strong attention to detail.

Work Environment

This position operates within a large, modern automotive manufacturing environment that includes body weld, paint shop, and related production areas. The role is highly hands-on and involves regular interaction with industrial robots, automation equipment, PLCs, and other production machinery on the shop floor. You collaborate closely with multiple groups, including systems engineering, digital engineering, production pilot, production engineering, production team members, and production management, as well as upper management. The work schedule may include planned weekend work to support installations, trials, and production changes, and there may be travel to vendor locations and North American manufacturing plants to prepare and validate equipment. The environment is project-focused with long-term, stable programs and ongoing model launches and equipment upgrades, offering significant opportunities for learning and professional growth. Paid time off, paid holidays, and overtime compensation for hours worked over 40 per week contribute to a supportive work–life balance, and travel arrangements are coordinated and supported for contractors. The culture emphasizes respect, collaboration, and continuous improvement while supporting complex, multi-year manufacturing projects.
