Job Description

The Staff Accountant is responsible for the preparation, review, and approval of day-to-day monthly journal entries, transaction processing, recording, reporting, and oversight of general ledger reconciliation in the accounting system and related modules. This role involves working closely with Finance management staff to assess and implement systemic business process improvements that enhance efficiency and internal controls.

Responsibilities

  • Independently ensure the timely and accurate recording of all regional activity and ensure that all reconciliations are completed in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Support required accounting and financial management training for HQ and Regional Office staff.
  • Prepare monthly account reconciliations and analyses as directed, including bank, petty cash, subsidiary, general ledger, fixed assets, prepaids, and specific expense accounts.
  • Work with staff on outstanding items and reconcile subledger modules to general ledgers as part of the month-end close.
  • Prepare journal entries with proper accounting classifications in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Analyze and prepare reports to be utilized in financial statements and audit schedule preparation with other key finance staff.
  • Assist with the preparation and coordination of audit-requested schedules/samples and ensure appropriate documentation of policies and procedures.
  • In coordination with senior Finance staff, actively support the monthly close process.
  • Support ongoing improvements to policies, procedures, internal controls, and tools to achieve greater operating efficiencies and enhanced customer service support.
  • Facilitate effective communication and planning systems and processes with all Departments and other Finance staff.
  • Assist with the facilitation of the annual budget and review employee expense reports as needed.
  • Responsible for the effective completion of other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills

  • 3-4 years of experience in accounting.
  • Experience with accounting, accounts payable, general ledger, reconciliation, accounts receivable, month-end, balance sheet, and bank reconciliation.
  • Proficiency in audit procedures, Excel, VLOOKUP, pivot tables, and Dynamics 365.
  • Understanding of debits and credits and heavy experience in reconciliations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience in accounting, balance sheet reconciliations, financial statement analysis, budgeting, and client support.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required; Master's degree and/or active CPA license preferred.
  • Microsoft D365 Finance and Operations and Concur experience desired.
  • Experience in key finance and accounting functions, including payments and accounts payable processing, revenue recognition, general ledger maintenance, cash management, budgeting, financial analysis, and strategic business decision support.
  • Superior interpersonal abilities and supervisory skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong training and content facilitation skills.
  • Ability to assess and independently resolve a wide range of issues creatively.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Work Environment

This role operates in a hybrid work environment based in Washington, DC. The position reports to the senior Manager of Accounting and falls under the Director of Accounting Operations.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Washington, DC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.85 - $32.69/hr.
