Public Safety Communications Supervisor

Location: Washington, DC

Position Overview

A public safety communications organization in Washington, DC is seeking experienced Supervisory Staff to provide advanced technical and operational leadership within a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) / Emergency Communications Center (ECC). This role is responsible for overseeing shift operations, maintaining appropriate staffing levels, coordinating quality assurance activities, and ensuring the effective operation of communications equipment and systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide shift-level supervision of PSAP/ECC operations
  • Evaluate daily operational reports and manage shift workloads
  • Assign staff and ensure appropriate staffing coverage is maintained
  • Monitor employee performance and provide operational guidance
  • Coordinate and schedule quality assurance and compliance activities
  • Operate and support duty-related communications equipment as needed
  • Ensure adherence to policies, procedures, laws, and regulations governing public safety communications
  • Assist with troubleshooting operational or communications equipment issues
  • Maintain situational awareness and operational readiness during routine and emergency incidents

Minimum Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience, including prior supervisory experience
  • Certifications and training in 911 call taking and dispatching disciplines
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience as a Public Safety Communications Officer will be considered

Required Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of E-911 call center technology and public safety call-taking certifications
  • Strong understanding of policies, procedures, laws, and regulations related to public safety communications
  • Proficiency in operating Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems, digital communications, telephone, and radio equipment
  • Working knowledge of lead worker and supervisory principles
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word
  • Ability to quickly acquire and apply knowledge of agency administrative and operational functions
  • Ability to troubleshoot communications or operational equipment as needed
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to direct, support, and evaluate staff performance
  • Ability to resolve conflict situations effectively and professionally
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to act decisively and remain composed in emergency situations
  • Ability to work effectively under stress while exercising tact and sound judgment
