BASIC FUNCTION: The primary purpose of the position is to direct the day-to-day functions of the nursing unit and to plan, organize, develop and direct the overall operation of the Department in accordance with current Federal, State, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations to assure that the highest degree of quality care is provided to the residents at all times. Provide professional assistance to all residents and staff of St. Paul's Senior Homes and Services when not precluded by other duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assumes responsibility and accountability of directing the activities and programs of the facility, in consultation with the Administrator, COO, or CEO as necessary, in the absence of the Administrator.
  • Supervise Assistant Director of Nursing in daily responsibilities and duties per DON’s discretion.
  • Participate as a member of the “Culture Change” committees and teams, partnering with the Administrator to assist in developing and implementing culture change projects. This may include attendance at education seminars/meetings and instructing/education staff members regarding “Culture Change”.
  • Serves on various committees of the facility as directed or as may become necessary, or as required by Federal, State, or local regulations. Also serves as the facility’s Safety Officer, chairing the facility’s safety committee, and attending and representing the Health Center on the St. Paul’s Safety Officer’s Committee.
  • Evaluates and implements recommendations from the facility's committees and/or consultants.
  • Ensures the availability of a responsible staff member to assume administrative responsibility in the absence of the Director of Nursing.
  • Plans, develops, organizes implements, evaluates, and directs the Nursing Department, as well as its programs and activities, in accordance with current State and Federal regulations and guidelines that govern Nursing Facilities, maintaining regulatory compliance at all times.
  • Develops, maintains, and periodically updates written policies and procedures as necessary and at least annually that govern the day-to-day functions of the Nursing Department.
  • Develops and maintains written position descriptions and performance evaluations for each staff position.
  • Assists department coordinators (activities, social services, etc.) to establish a rapport in and between departments so that each may be an effective team member.
  • Interprets and implements the facility's policies and procedures to employees, residents, families, visitors, government agencies, etc.
  • Participates as a member of the St. Paul’s Weekend Manager Schedule.
  • Represents the facility in dealings with outside agencies.
  • Makes written and oral reports and recommendations to the Administrator concerning the operation of the facility and Nursing Department.
  • Participates in the development of a plan of correction for deficiencies noted during survey inspections in co-operation with the Administrator.
  • Coordinates the Annual Patient Care Policy Committee meeting.
  • Monitors the Infection Control, Safety and Quality Assurance programs of the Department.
  • Makes routine inspections of the facility to assure that established policies and procedures are being implemented and followed.
  • Assists the MDS Nurse., Charge Nurses and Director of Staff Development to ensure compliance with all Federal, State and Local regulations. Directs and supervises the Unit Clerk ensuring the appropriate cordial response to residents, visitors, physicians and staff and the employee’s productive work performance.
  • Generates creative and innovative ideas that will assist the Administrator to achieve the goals and objectives of St. Paul’s Senior Homes & Services.
  • Coordinates personnel development and staff mentoring.
  • Interacts and evaluates the effectiveness of contracted healthcare services, including PT, OT, ST, and diagnostic services.
  • Ensures that subordinates comply with personnel requirements for annual physicals, TB testing, and required education.
  • Maintains confidential staff files and ensures personnel records are complete for all subordinates.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Administrator, COO or CEO.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to communicate with, be interested in, and have compassion for the aged.
  • Must have good communication skills, both verbal and written in the English language.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills to meet deadlines and goals.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
  • Must be knowledgeable in nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as the laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to skilled nursing care and personnel administration.
  • Must possess the ability to work harmoniously with, and supervise both professional and non-professional personnel.
  • Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures that are necessary for providing quality care and maintaining a socially, morally and fiscally responsible operation.
  • Must be able to cope with multiple responsibilities in a changing and evolving environment.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • A minimum of 3 years management experience in a skilled nursing facility.
  • Recommended background would be five years as a Director of Nursing or a combination of three years as Director of Nursing and two years as Director of Staff Development.
  • Must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of California, and must possess a current CPR card.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequently must be able to push and pull objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to lift and carry objects more than 20 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. The ability to perform difficult manipulative skills is expected and will occur occasionally too frequently.
  • Must be able to walk, stand, stoop, squat, bend, and stand and sit for prolonged periods of time, in some cases frequently.
  • Must be able to frequently identify objects at a distance of 50 feet, read fine print and discriminate among colors.
  • Hearing will frequently involve distinguishing normal sounds where there is some background noise. Consistently must be able to speak clearly and make self-understood.
