Job Description

Position Summary

The MRI Technologist I works independently to perform a variety of routine MRI and MRA procedures while delivering high-quality diagnostic imaging and exceptional patient care. This role provides direct support to physicians during diagnostic and special procedures and adheres to all established MRI safety standards, protocols, and regulatory guidelines. The technologist functions as a key member of the direct patient care team and contributes to a collaborative, safety-focused clinical environment.


Essential Job Functions

• Promotes a positive and professional work environment.

• Collaborates effectively with physicians, nurses, and other members of the patient care team.

• Demonstrates peer-to-peer accountability in support of department goals related to retention, engagement, and performance.

• Communicates clearly using verbal, nonverbal, and written methods to ensure mutual understanding.

• Responds proactively to patient needs and concerns.

• Performs routine MRI and MRA procedures in accordance with established protocols.

• Optimizes imaging protocols to enhance image quality, patient safety, and patient experience, including positioning, preparation, and technical parameters.

• Assists physicians during diagnostic and special procedures, including adherence to sterile technique.

• Utilizes AIDET principles, key words, and patient-focused communication techniques when interacting with patients and families.

• Strictly follows all MRI safety policies and procedures.

• Maintains proper sterile technique during applicable procedures.

• Complies with departmental, hospital, and regulatory safety standards and policies.

• Participates in LEAN initiatives, WASTE walks, and continuous improvement projects.

• Reports near misses and safety events promptly through the appropriate reporting systems.

• Performs weekly imaging equipment quality control to ensure equipment is safe and fully operational.

• Applies critical thinking skills to identify and respond to patient reactions, medication effects, or potential complications, escalating as needed.

• Completes accurate and timely documentation of all procedures and enters charges at the time services are rendered.

• Uses departmental resources efficiently and minimizes waste.

• Ensures timecard accuracy and timely approval.

• Participates in departmental projects, shared governance, and professional development activities.

• Seeks ongoing learning opportunities beyond baseline competencies to support continued growth as an MRI technologist.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrated competency in safely performing MRI procedures as validated through ongoing skills assessments and performance evaluations.

• Proficiency in spoken and written English sufficient to support patient safety, documentation, and communication.

• Strong customer service orientation with the ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and colleagues.

• Basic computer proficiency, including the use of electronic health records, radiology information systems, PACS, and standard office software.

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to function effectively as a team player.

• Ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision while maintaining organization and attention to detail.


Education and Experience

• Completion of an accredited MRI training program.

• Minimum of one year of MRI experience preferred.


Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.

• MRI certification required or registry-eligible at the time of hire.

• Registry-eligible candidates must obtain MRI certification through ARRT or an equivalent certifying body (e.g., ARMRIT) within six months of hire.


Working Environment and Physical Requirements

• Work attire consists of scrubs.

• Equipment utilized includes MRI units from multiple vendors, contrast injectors, electronic health records, and PACS systems.

• May be required to travel to affiliated campuses or facilities.

• Participation in call, weekend, holiday, and disaster response rotations is required.

• Potential exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, hazardous medications, non-ionizing radiation, and combative or disoriented patients.

• Ability to push or pull a minimum of 50 pounds.

• Ability to walk long distances and stand or sit continuously for up to 60 minutes at a time.
