Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Orthopedics night shift position at a Level III trauma acute care facility, requiring an active IA or Compact RN license and a minimum of one year of experience.

Details

  • Acute care hospital setting, Med/Surg Orthopedics unit with 28 beds plus 22 overflow capacity
  • Patient population includes total joint replacements (knees, hips, shoulders), fractures, COPD, diabetes, wounds, sepsis, pneumonia, CHF, oncology, dementia, ETOH/drug abuse, and other general medical-surgical diagnoses
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5; CNAs/patient care techs available at a 1:10 ratio
  • Charge nurse present on each shift and takes a patient assignment
  • IV drips on the unit include Heparin, IV antibiotics, antithrombotics, and narcotics; RNs are not required to titrate drips
  • Telemetry monitors available at the main nurses' station; monitor techs are based in the ICU
  • Epic EMR used on this unit
  • 12-hour night shifts (1830–0700); self-scheduling
  • Every third weekend required; Friday and Saturday nights are considered the weekend for nights
  • Floating required to PCU and McDermott (behavioral health) units
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active IA or Compact (NLC) RN license required; pending licenses are not accepted
  • Current BLS certification required; pending certifications are not accepted
  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
  • Driver's license required for consideration and will be used to verify permanent address
  • 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked — both must include dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
  • Candidates may not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past year; candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered

Additional Information

  • Orientation consists of one week of classroom training followed by one 12-hour shift on the unit
  • A pass/fail open-book exam is administered during orientation; a score of 90% or higher is required to continue the assignment
  • Unit emphasizes hourly rounding and bedside shift report; travelers are expected to be flexible, self-directed, and adaptable to change
  • Floating may occur to the PCU and behavioral health units
  • Navy blue scrubs required; artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas
  • All requested time off must be submitted upfront; additional RTO will not be approved after consideration
