Job DescriptionRole Summary

Howard University Hospital seeks a Registered Nurse (RN) – Emergency Department to join our Emergency Services team in Washington, DC. This role delivers high-quality, patient-centered nursing care in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment and supports our mission of excellence in clinical care, teaching, and service.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide direct nursing care to Emergency Department patients across a wide range of clinical conditions and acuity levels
  • Perform rapid assessments, prioritize care needs, and apply critical thinking in emergent situations
  • Administer medications and treatments safely, following orders and evidence-based practice
  • Monitor patient status, recognize changes in condition, and escalate appropriately
  • Maintain infection prevention practices and adhere to safety and quality standards
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary teams
  • Support patient and family education, discharge readiness, and care coordination
  • Demonstrate strong clinical skills, bedside manner, communication, multitasking, and teamwork
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation per hospital standards

Required QualificationsEducation

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing

Licensure

  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the District of Columbia

Certifications

  • American Heart Association BLS required
  • American Heart Association ACLS required
  • TNCC required within 1 year of employment
  • PALS preferred

Experience

  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
  • Emergency Department experience preferred

Knowledge / Skills

  • Strong critical thinking and clinical judgment
  • Working knowledge of professional nursing principles and biopsychosocial concepts applied to practice
  • Knowledge of pharmacology, therapeutic/adverse drug actions, and complication recognition
  • Competence in oral and written English
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with staff, providers, hospital/university leadership, and the public

Pay + Schedule

  • Schedule: Full-time; three (3) 12-hour shifts per week
  • Shift: Days – 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM
  • Weekend/Holiday Rotation: Every other weekend / Every other holiday

This position is covered under the DC Nurses Association (DCNA) collective bargaining agreement. Base pay range: $37.33–$62.43/hr, commensurate with experience and qualifications per the DCNA wage scale. Effective July 1, 2026, the base range will increase to $37.89–$63.36/hr per the updated collective bargaining agreement.

A unit premium applies to all hours worked in this unit.

Additional compensation may include a night shift differential for qualifying evening/night shifts and a weekend differential for qualifying weekend shifts.
