Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility or Special Education, Certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS), and 1+ years Orientation and Mobility Specialist experience required. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.
An exciting opportunity is available for an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) to support K-12 students in a school setting located in Kent, WA. This contract position spans the current school year (CSY) and offers the chance to make a meaningful impact on students' independence and mobility skills.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct orientation and mobility assessments for students with visual impairments
- Develop and implement individualized training plans to help students navigate their environments safely and confidently
- Collaborate with educators, families, and related service providers to support student goals
- Provide direct instruction in travel skills both inside and outside the school environment
- Maintain documentation and progress reports according to school and district guidelines
Qualifications:
- Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) is required
- Experience working with K-12 students who have visual impairments
- Strong knowledge of orientation and mobility techniques and best practices
- Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team
- Effective communication skills with students, families, and staff
