Equipment Finance Underwriter (on site, St. Louis, MO, 63128)
Job Description
Job Description
At CAN Capital, we help small businesses access the capital they need to grow. We’re looking for an experienced Equipment Finance Business Underwriter who thrives on making smart, sound credit decisions and enjoys partnering with Sales, Operations, and Credit teams to move deals forward.
If you’re energized by analyzing complex financials, exercising strong judgment, and playing a critical role in funding transactions that help businesses succeed—this role is for you.
What You’ll Do
As an Equipment Finance Business Underwriter, you’ll evaluate credit applications from businesses seeking equipment financing, balancing risk and opportunity while ensuring compliance with CAN Capital’s credit policies. You’ll underwrite both straightforward and complex transactions, including larger deals, and provide clear, well-documented recommendations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assessing the creditworthiness of prospective business customers using commercial and consumer credit reports, financial statements, tax returns, and supporting documentation
- Analyzing borrower financial performance through financial spreading, ratio analysis, industry comparisons, and guarantor strength
- Reviewing equipment invoices, quotes, purchase agreements, and vendor documentation to validate transaction structure and legitimacy
- Identifying gaps in application packages and clearly communicating next steps to internal and external partners
- Determining appropriate terms and conditions while adhering to credit policies and approved authority levels
- Supporting the funding process by coordinating with Sales, Operations, and other partners to ensure complete and accurate merchant packages
- Documenting underwriting decisions in a clear, concise, and audit-ready manner—especially for larger or more complex transactions
- Managing workload effectively to meet productivity targets, turnaround times, and service level expectations
- Staying informed on market trends, competitive dynamics, and evolving business needs
- Providing underwriting insight and recommendations to cross-functional partners, including Collections and Operations
RequirementsQualifications
- 3–5 years of commercial underwriting experience (equipment finance experience strongly preferred)
- Bachelor’s degree preferred (or equivalent relevant experience)
- Strong experience reviewing and interpreting business and personal financial statements, including tax returns and P&Ls
- Ability to analyze consumer credit reports from Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion
- Proven experience making risk-based credit decisions within an authority framework
- Exceptional attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy and quality
- Clear, confident written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time-management abilities
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, production-driven environment
- Experience with Salesforce and/or LeaseWorks is a plus
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
- Willingness to work full-time onsite in our St. Louis office, with occasional schedule flexibility as needed
If you are an experienced commercial underwriter who enjoys digging into the details, exercising sound judgment, and making a real difference—we’d love to hear from you.
