Summary

We are seeking a warm, organized, and collaborative early educator to serve as our Assistant Director at our child care center in Woodstock, Vermont (The Mill School) while also leading in the classroom. This is a hands-on leadership role that blends direct work with children and families with behind-the-scenes support for staff, licensing, and program operations.

You’ll spend part of your week in a lead teaching role, helping shape a nurturing, child-centered classroom. You’ll also support the Director with administrative tasks, staff coaching, and compliance — helping our program run smoothly and collaboratively.

Your expected hours will be completed between 7am and 5pm Monday through Friday but your hours will be dependent on center needs. To learn more about us, please visit www.themillschool.com.

Key Responsibilities:Classroom Teaching (~70–80%)

  • Serve as lead or co-lead teacher in a classroom
  • Implement developmentally appropriate, emergent curriculum
  • Foster strong relationships with children and families
  • Model high-quality, inclusive care and behavioral guidance

Program Admin Support (~20–30%)

  • Support daily operations (ratios, scheduling, family communication)
  • Help with enrollment, licensing, and STARS documentation
  • Assist with staff orientation, feedback, and team culture
  • Step in for Director as needed to maintain continuity
  • Contribute to program planning, events, and professional development


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Associate’s degree in Early Childhood or related field
  • At least 3 years of classroom experience; leadership or mentoring experience a plus
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with Vermont child care regulations (or willingness to learn)
  • CPR/First Aid certified (or willing to obtain)



Duties

Responsibilities include:

  • Classroom prep (light cleaning)
  • Excellent communication with director and parents
  • Supervise and monitor the safety of children
  • Prepare children for snacktime (snack provided by parent)
  • Help children keep good hygiene
  • Organize activities or implement a curriculum that allows children to learn about the world and explore their interests
  • Develop schedules and routines to ensure that children have enough physical activity, rest, and playtime
  • Watch for signs of emotional or developmental problems in children and bring potential problems to the attention of parents or guardians
  • Keep records of children's progress, routines, and interests
