POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Think Tank seeks a part-time Veterinarian to support NOAA Fisheries' NEFSC by providing expert medical care, nutrition guidance, and veterinary consultation for marine animals, including fish, invertebrates, sea turtles, and marine mammals. The Veterinarian will oversee animal health protocols, support staff training, and ensure best practices in accordance with Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) guidelines and federal accessibility and biosecurity standards.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide routine and emergency veterinary care and consultation (on-site and remote).

Conduct physical exams, diagnose illnesses/injuries, and prescribe/administer treatments.

Oversee animal health monitoring, medical testing, and recordkeeping.

Establish and improve protocols for health monitoring, biosecurity, and animal care.

Guide aquarium staff, interns, and volunteers in animal health and nutrition practices.

Ensure safe operation of medical equipment, including x-ray systems.

Provide tele-veterinary support to other NEFSC fish-holding facilities, including treatment recommendations.

Visit other NEFSC facilities annually to review fish health, captivity, and biosecurity practices.

Participate in regional travel and occasional overtime during emergency events.

Prepare monthly progress reports summarizing activities, issues, and recommendations.
REQUIREMENTS:

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or VMD from an AVMA-accredited institution.

Licensed veterinarian in Massachusetts, authorized to practice and prescribe medications.

Telemedicine license in New Jersey (or ability to obtain in other states as required).

Minimum 5 years' experience in veterinary care of wild or captive marine animals.

Credentialed veterinary technician background strongly preferred.

Experience caring for fish, invertebrates, marine mammals, and sea turtles.

Proficiency with medical record systems aligned with AZA standards.

Strong collaboration skills; able to work effectively with staff, interns, volunteers, and the public.

Ability to provide both routine and emergency care in person and remotely.

Qualified to prescribe medications, order tests, and maintain medical protocols.

Valid driver's license; ability to operate a government vehicle.

Willingness to work flexible hours, including emergencies, and travel within the region.

Must be locally available to respond to animal health needs.
