Job Summary
The Nursing Assistant (NA) acts as a caregiver for residents during their scheduled shifts in long-term care. This role involves delivering resident-centered nursing care and assisting with daily living activities under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The NA is responsible for providing age-appropriate care that addresses both the physical and psychological needs of residents as outlined in their care plans.
As a vital member of the nursing team, the NA is expected to adhere to infection prevention protocols and utilize Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriately. Responsibilities include:
- Assisting with basic health care needs such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and toileting
- Recording vital signs and providing psychosocial support
- Helping residents with mobility, including transferring and repositioning
- Facilitating a positive dining experience by assisting with meals and snacks
- Documenting resident interactions and care outcomes
- Communicating changes in residents' conditions to the charge nurse
- Collecting non-invasive body fluid specimens
- Providing housekeeping and laundry services to maintain clean living areas
- Encouraging resident participation in wellness and recreational programs
- Participating in departmental committees and task forces as needed
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred, but not mandatory
- Minimum age of 16
- Previous clinical or nursing assistant experience in long-term care is preferred
- Must obtain Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification from the State Board of Nursing within four months of starting, with training provided by the facility
- Completion of annual competency testing and maintenance of continuing education credits (minimum of 12 hours required annually)
- For applicable states, certification and registration with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry may be required
- Depending on responsibilities, this role may require a valid driver’s license and a motor vehicle report
