POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs, interprets, and correlates clinical laboratory tests by following protocols to assist in provider diagnosis and treatment. Demonstrates proficiency and understanding of routine procedures. Expected to utilize complex problems solving skills in resolving clinical and instrument problems. Collects specimens as required, completes patient information and other clerical duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Use techniques specified in procedure manuals for analysis of patient specimens to include urine, blood, sputum, feces, and other biological fluids.
- Receives written, electronic, and verbal laboratory requests for routine and/or STAT orders.
- Obtain blood samples from patients quickly, efficiently, and with a minimum of discomfort, prioritizing stat requests from routine samples.
- Performs chemical, serological, bacteriological, hematological, and microscopic tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Reports accurate test results according to all appropriate CLIA rules in a timely manner.
- Accurately performs urine cultures identification and sensitivities, Blood Culture Identification, gram stains, and other molecular and PCR testing.
- Performs transfusion testing, including ABO/RH types, antibody screens, and crossmatch to ascertain compatibility.
- Draws and performs arterial blood gases.
- Performs electrocardiograms.
- Performs and checks Quality control values to ensure accuracy of testing and report problems to Laboratory manager.
- Calibrates and maintains laboratory equipment such as chemistry, hematology, and coagulation analyzers.
- Appropriately reports any special circumstances or critical results to providers and/or appropriate staff, with complete documentation.
- Immediately reports any blood bank issues to Laboratory Manager and Pathologist as instructed.
- Performs clerical functions as needed.
- Performs Proficiency testing when assigned.
- Shares call to include some nights, weekends, holidays, etc.
- Attends meetings and in-service sessions, as directed.
- Performs other assigned duties.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate of Science Degree
- MLT Certification, ASCP or equivalent.
- Certification in illegal drug collection within 1 year of hire date
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficient in General Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, ABGs, Urine Microbiology, Spot Testing and General Blood Banking.
- EMR knowledge preferred.

Must be able to work efficiently both independently and collaboratively with teams and leadership while demonstrating a high level of integrity, sound judgment, and attention to detail. This role requires professionalism in all interactions with employees, patients, and the public, along with the ability to maintain strict confidentiality and comply with all SECHD, state, and federal policies and regulations. Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills are essential, as is the ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to change, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. The candidate must communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills with a professional and compassionate demeanor. Computer proficiency and the ability to learn new software systems are required. Knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations, including Laboratory and CLIA requirements, is preferred. Dependability, initiative, and the ability to see tasks through to completion are critical, as is a commitment to safety, quality, and working under stressful conditions and/or irregular hours.
