Summary

The Financial Support Specialist position is a case management position that provides quality financial management services to adult clients. This position assists in managing client funds to help ensure access to food, shelter, clothing, and medical services. This position assists in managing funds and paying bills and accumulate savings while assisting client to learn and develop skills to improve financial independence.

Essential Functions

  • Stays well informed of Social Security Administration (SSA) rules and regulations regarding payee services.
  • Complies with all rules and regulations of the SSA regarding provision of payee services to persons receiving Social Security benefits.
  • Respond in a timely manner to all requests by SSA including submitting annual reports.
  • Provides payee services exclusively for clients of CrossWinds Counseling and Wellness.
  • Follows policy and procedures regarding payee services.
  • Applies payee services in accordance with client’s individualized treatment plan. Coordinates client needs, services, and client progress with client’s treatment team.
  • Assists client in completing necessary agreements and releases of information with SSA, financial institutions, creditors, and other involved parties that may include family members.
  • Assists clients in setting up a fiduciary account and personal discretionary spending account.
  • Assists clients in setting and following a budget with primary emphasis on meeting financial needs for food, shelter, clothing, and medical needs. Allows for minimal personal spending or more as determined by SSA. Assists clients in setting financial goals and allowing for the accumulation of conserved funds.
  • Assists clients in learning, developing, and practicing financial management skills which are directly related to developing and maintaining behaviors that contribute to improved mental health and independent living.
  • Assists clients in resolving past debts by working with creditors to set up payment plans favorable for the client and/or advocating for forgiveness of debt.
  • Assists clients in paying bills.
  • Maintains client financial records including all deposits and debits. Balances all accounts monthly.
  • Makes financial records available to clients, supervisors, and auditors on demand.

Work Environment

This job operates in a community setting, as well as in a professional office setting. This position primarily works with clients out in the community and within the agency’s residential facilities. This role uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; handle objects; grasp and reach for items with hands and arms; manipulate hands and fingers; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. The employee is required to become certified in Managing Aggressive Behaviors (MAB), which includes training in proper restraint/physical intervention techniques to be utilized as a last resort. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Language skills are required, including the ability to read, write, comprehend, and speak the English language. This position also requires the ability to interpret written materials, write reports and business correspondence, and effectively present and respond to questions.

Requirements:

Skills & Abilities

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or related field is required. One year of work experience in the health and human services field is preferred.

Certifications & Licenses

Must complete Case Management Training and provide certificate within 6 months of hire.

Computer Skills

Computer experience in Microsoft Office programs and basic computer fluency.

Additional Qualifications

Ability to work with persons with severe and persistent mental illness; ability to work independently and as a member of a therapeutic team; possess demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to react effectively in a variety of human service situations; competency in working with outside agencies including financial institutions and the U.S. government; comfortable working with financial and accounting practices.
