Secondary Site: Charleston-area facilities (1 day per week)


Schedule:


Part-time: 1–2 days per week


Duration: Indefinite / ongoing engagement


Regular onsite presence required at both Raleigh and Charleston locations


Position Overview:


Sterling is seeking a Part-Time Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist to support laboratory and chemical-handling operations. This role is ideal for an EHS professional with hands-on experience in chemical environments who can execute safety programs, conduct inspections, and ensure regulatory compliance.


The EHS Specialist will work closely with site leadership to implement, monitor, and inspect EHS programs, identify risks, and drive corrective actions. While familiarity with regulatory requirements is important, the primary need is for a strong onsite presence with the ability to execute and enforce safety practices.


Key Responsibilities:


Support site management and supervision to ensure compliance with all applicable EHS regulations, corporate policies, and site procedures.


Maintain and administer site EHS systems, policies, and procedures.


Conduct routine facility, equipment, and work practice inspections to identify safety and health hazards.


Ensure EHS reporting is completed accurately and on time.


Lead and support incident and accident investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective action recommendations.


Serve as the company representative when interacting with regulatory and government agencies related to EHS matters.


Develop, update, and implement health and safety procedures across laboratory and operational areas.


Prepare, schedule, and deliver EHS training, including emergency response, workplace safety, and regulatory topics.


Compile and submit required safety, health, and environmental reports to corporate and regulatory agencies.


Assist with contractor EHS compliance, including onsite oversight and documentation.


Perform additional EHS-related duties as assigned.


Work Environment:


Bench-level laboratory and chemical-handling environment


Routine exposure to laboratory operations, equipment, and chemical materials


Requires frequent onsite inspections and interaction with staff


Preferred Education:


Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, Chemistry, or a related scientific field


Experience:


3–5 years of hands-on EHS experience, preferably in a chemical handling or laboratory environment


Minimum Qualifications:


Prior EHS/HSE experience in an industrial, laboratory, or chemical setting


OSHA 30-hour certification preferred


CSP or CIH certification strongly preferred


Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint


Ability to develop and deliver training using various media formats


Strong observational, organizational, and communication skills


Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
