GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Director of Athletics, under the supervision of the VP of Student Services, will be responsible for the planning, coordination, and oversight of all college athletic programs as well as the management of the Fitness and Wellness Center. The Director will maintain the integrity of the college athletic programs by ensuring compliance with all applicable NJCAA regulations, as well as all applicable state and federal laws. The Director will work collaboratively within the college community to support the personal and academic development of our student-athletes.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Since every duty associated with this position may not be described herein, employees may be required to perform duties not specifically spelled out below, although considered incidental in the performance of this position.
- Create and manage the Athletic Department and Fitness and Wellness Center budgets, including allocation of funds for equipment, travel, facilities, and personnel. Recommend budgets for all sports, assist in establishing fees for the fitness center, prioritize equipment purchases, and initially approve all expenditures.
- Direct and supervise the College wellness services, plan activities, and develop appropriate programs and services to meet the wellness needs of the college community.
- Supervise the Executive Assistant to the Athletic Director, Fitness and Wellness Coach, athletic activities, coaching staff, and any contractual positions in the Athletic Department.
- Schedule all intercollegiate athletic events and athletic facilities for practices and contests.
- Hire, develop, and evaluate coaching staff, following the College’s hiring processes.
- Monitor and maintain student athlete eligibility according to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) guidelines.
- Screen all athletic scholarship recommendations from the coaching staff.
- Participate in or provide oversight for public relations activities, news releases to local media, and presentations to community interest groups Provide internal communications regarding athletic events and outcomes.
- Represent the College in all MCCAA and NJCAA communications and meetings.
- Oversee athletic camps in concert with coach(es).
- Ensure compliance with all College policies and procedures and state and federal guidelines as associated with Athletics.
- Coordinate and oversee athletic fundraising activities in collaboration with the GOCC Foundation Executive Director.
- Assess department, College, and community needs and develop partnerships and other collaborative relationships with business/industry, high schools, colleges, universities, and other entities.
- Maintain records on all sports, activities, and participants.
- Attend all home sporting events or appoint designee on an as-needed basis.
- Conduct regular reviews of athletic programs and implement necessary adjustments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Four (4) years of related work experience in sports management and administration.
- Experience as an athletic coach and/or athletic director, preferably in a higher education setting.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage budgets and financial resources effectively.
- Demonstrated commitment to student-athlete academic success and development.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s Degree.
- Experience with fitness and wellness programming and development.
- Experience as an Athletic Director in a higher education setting.
