Youth Group Leader Job Description
Foothills United Methodist Church, Rescue, CA
Position Type: Part-time
Reports to: Pastor and CFYM (Children, Family, Youth Ministry) Director
Overview:
We are a small, welcoming Methodist church seeking a Youth Group Leader who is passionate about guiding and nurturing young people on their individual faith journeys. The ideal candidate will be open-minded, non-judgmental, and committed to creating an inclusive environment where all youth feel safe, valued, and encouraged in their personal, social, and spiritual development.
Key Responsibilities:
· Lead and teach youth Sunday School classes every Sunday morning.
· Plan and lead a weekly youth group session, including developing monthly or seasonal themes with corresponding lessons and activities and support the youth in other related activities
· Encourage youth leadership and involvement within the church.
· Create an inclusive environment that welcomes youth of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences, reflecting Christ's love and justice.
· Maintain open, ongoing communication with youth, families, volunteers, the Pastor, and the congregation.
· Stay informed about youth ministry best practices and maintain certification in Safe Gatherings.
· Model a faithful Christian life and demonstrate a strong, flexible, and compassionate leadership style.
Qualifications:
· A personal commitment to Christian faith and a willingness to embrace and respect diverse expressions of belief, and a passion for teaching about grace and service.
· Experience working with children and youth in an educational, ministry, or mentorship role.
· Ability to create engaging and developmentally appropriate lessons and activities.
· Willingness to work flexible hours
· Team player with a collaborative spirit.
· Must complete Safe Gatherings training and comply with all child protection policies, including passing a background check and being fingerprinted.
Schedule Expectations:
· The work will primarily be focused on Sunday morning and Sunday evening and will include preparation for meetings and follow-up with youth throughout the week. For details, see the sample weekly schedule.
Sample Weekly Schedule:
· 9:00 AM: Arrive at church, prepare the youth classroom and review the Sunday School lesson.
· Greet families and youth as they arrive.
· Participate in the beginning portion of the worship service.
· Lead the Youth Sunday School class.
· After class, clean up the classroom space.
· Check in briefly with the Pastor and CFYM Director.
Sunday Evening:
· 5:45 PM: Return to church to prepare for Youth Group (set up activities, review the lesson).
· 6:00–8:00 PM: Lead Youth Group session (lesson, activities, fellowship time).
· 8:00–8:15 PM: Clean up Youth Group space before departure.
Monday–Saturday: (Flexible, work-from-home hours)
· Plan the next Sunday School lesson and Sunday evening Youth Group session.
· Create and organize activities for Youth Group nights.
· Coordinate and communicate with volunteers as needed (e.g., dinners, event help).
· Check and respond to emails from families, church staff, or volunteers.
· Send a weekly update to families, including reminders, upcoming events, and announcements.
